First of all, I have to say that I am in no way, shape, or form a New York Yankees fan. I root against them every chance I get. But with this being Paul O'Neill's final season, I thought I would just share my thoughts about him.
Basically, I love the guy as a player. I can't think of anyone who played the game harder. He wore his heart on his sleeve and went all out in everything he did. Throwing helmets, slamming his bat, cursing after pop-ups, etc., was just O'Neill's personality. While he was never really a superstar, he was a solid play year after year. Every baseball fan has that player who, although they don't hit 50 bombs a year, they love because of the way they play the game. For me, that was always Paul O'Neill. First with the Reds, then with the Yankees, O'Neill was always the guy I thought played the game most like me. When I was a kid I would immitate the swings of the big time players. Daryl Strawberry, Will Clark, Barry Bonds, guys like that. Even though I may have wanted to be those guys, I always looked at O'Neill and wanted to play like him. He never left anything on the field. O'Neill may never make the Hall, but for me, he'll always be a great.

I don't afree. I don't think I've ever seen another player piss and moan like O'Neill. No matter what happens he throws a hissy fit.

I can see why you think that way, but I've always seen O'Neill's fits as sign of his competitiveness. Most of the time he's throws those fits because he's mad at himself.

Besides, I wouldn't expect you to agree with me Froy, I know you hate the Yankees.

I don't 'afree' either... Justify O'Neil's fits however you wish, but the bottom line is that he's a fucking lunatic. Getting mad at yourself is one thing, but having a 20 minute conversation with yourself in right field after striking out the previous inning is a definate sign of serious instability.

I like the lunatics. So what? He gets mad at himself and he throws hissy fits. It has nothing to do with his playing ability. He's just passionate...and insane :p
Kinda reminds me of Ron Hextall...I love that guy too

If I seem a little scattered There's an empty space where something used to beat
I'm definately shattered Like some stupid piece of china How pathetic of me

Let it be me, I'll be your poetry in motion. A desolate island when you sail the deep blue ocean. All your tomorrows for all your yesterdays. I'll be a lamb or a lion you can tame. And I hope and I pray that my offer will find its way. Yes I know there'll come a day, when in return I'll need the same. Let it be me, the star who guides you through the night. I'll make it worth your while.

O'Neil has definitely been my all time favorite ball player. The guy plays with a passion that is like no other. If it looks like he throws hissy fits about every little thing its cuz hes a competitive player that wants to be the best that he can be on the field. Yeah he might throw a bat down after flying out, only cuz its a wasted chance to get his team runs. If u see him talkin to himself out in the field its cuz hes trying to figure out what he did wrong and how to correct it the next time he comes to the plate. I think hell definitely make it into the hall, maybe not on the 1st chance hes eligable but he will make it in.

Even as a Mets fan, I like O'Neill, too. His lunacy is seperate from whether or not he's a player you respect. Guys who bust their ass and crash into things and get dirty are always my favorites, no matter the sport- that's why NY fans love Charles Oakley so much. When I lived in Philly, I couldn't help but get behind the '93 Phils- they had Dykstra, who I already loved from the Mets teams. But they had Dutch Daulton, Mitch Williams, and John Kruk, too. "Ma'am, I'm not an athlete. I'm a baseball player." A team of O'Neills, really.
Pete Rose, Piazza, David Cone, Hojo, Mookie, Billy Smith, Mattingly, Nettles, LT and many more.

He is insane but that is why people love him. He doesn't throw a hissy fit cause of personal reasons or cause he didn't push his average u or hit a homer for his career stats. he has never ever been a "me" player like mattingly was. he throws those fits because as joe torre said "he feels as if he let the team down, he may yell at the ump but he will never blame the ump he will only blame himself." There is a difference between having a competitive nature and being a cry baby. I will definetly miss the son of a bitch.

shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government
of the people, by the people for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

In baseball, and infact in the rest of other sports, theyre are plenty of cry babies and great competitors. O'Neil is the latter of the 2. There was never a time i heard him say that he let himself down or didnt get a certain # of homeruns or whatever. Gonzo, like u, i will as well miss him.
