NEW YORK – The NBA announced Wednesday that it suspended Los Angeles Clippers forward Lamar Odom and Los Angeles Lakers forward Isaiah Rider each for five games for violating terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program.

The NBA and the Players Association are prohibited from publicly disclosing information regarding the testing or treatment of any NBA player in the program, other than to announce a player's suspension or dismissal from the league.

The suspension is the latest chapter in the saga of Rider, who wore out his welcome with three teams due to repeated clashes with teammates, coaches and management.

The Lakers took a chance on Rider in the offseason, ignoring the "Bad Boy" image and signing him to a one-year contract. He has played all but one game, and is averaging 8.1 points and shooting just 43 percent from the field.

Odom, the fourth overall pick in the 1999 draft, is regarded as one of the best young all-around players in the NBA and leads the Clippers in scoring, rebounding, blocks and steals. He has played in 63 games this season and is averaging 17.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists.

A stiffer anti-drug program was instituted as part of the new collective bargaining agreement signed by owners and players before the 1998-99 season. A series of drug-related incidents involving players led to the new program.

Guard Jason Williams of the Sacramento Kings was suspended for the first five games of the 2000-01 season for not complying with his treatment obligations under the league's anti-drug program
