You cited the 49s and Cowboys of the 90s, but they were a couple lucky teams in the early days of free agency. The Cowboys drafted well before it started and signed long term. The 49ers just broke all the rules.
Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm sure someone will, but I think you are thinking of the salary cap here. Those teams as I understand it, mortgaged their futures (now), for the present (then) so they could win their rings. Free agency makes it more difficult to keep the most talented players because of the cap and the players salary demands.

no Mrs. Moose, I think you are right. The cowboys traded their way to the top, robbing minnesota of a few good picks, and signed those players long term to very good deals...but it cost them. They could only pay one or 2 guys money (Aikman and Emmitt) while the rest of the team was mediocre at best.

Personally, I like free agency and the salary cap. I have been a Seahawks fan for some time, and they never really do fantastically well, nor do they fail horribly. The salary cap and free agency keep teams from becoming the Montreal Expos, a team who has great players but must let them go because they can't afford them. The problem now in the NFL is that people's expectations are too high...we expect the same teams to be great year after year, and expect crappy teams to still suck

Seahawk fan... whoa. I didn't think they had any...

Kidding.....I am surprised when people admit that they are not only mainstream fans.

Teams moving all over the freeking country. It hard to build team loyality, and taditions. Especiall when Owner's are holding city's ransom to meet their demands, or they will move the team, but I guess that has gotten to be all pro sports.

WHAT???? What football team was releasing players because it couldn't afford them prior to free agency? None. In rare instances a player held out for more money. But teams did well or poorly due to coaching and the front office. This really hasn't changed. The Cardinals suck always.
I just hate the fact that every year players I like are in a different uniform and players I hate end up in mine.

I agree,

Free agency was demaned by the players union because of tight owners. Reggie White was a huge cog in the players getting free agency. The old owner of the Eagles was one of the cheapest owners around and with out the players being able to move, he could keep great talent for a bargin price.

The salary cap, I believe, was a product of the NFL compition committee trying to make the NFL more even from team to team to make "parity" during the regular season. I know that this is in a nut shell, but it is the basics......

JJ,

I think You and I just jinx the Raiders...

They lost to the Seahawks and allowed the 4th ever most rushing yards in NFL history...

How about those Rams... Jeez, some one needs to set up a few of those military tank stops that were put on the beaches of Normandy to stop the Rams rushing attack.

Oh, and, What ethic group is a Trung Canidate come from?

Mrs. Moosen,
It's not like there weren't any other great teams in the 70s besides the Steelers.
The Raiders, ...(I cut the other teams out because they don't matter to me)

ya know I am believing that the Raiders may be the best team in football right now. Rich Gannon seems to be having a true MVP season....

nah, every team has its bad days.....

In Charlie Gardners rookie year, he was with the Eagles. They went to San Fran on a Monady night I believe and clubbered the niners 40 - 8.

That year the Eagles were aweful and the niners only lost one game.

I still think that the Raiders have the best team this year. We'll see in Feb.
