NFL BREAKDOWN WEEK 8- NOVEMBER 4, 2001

Dallas Cowboys (2-4) at New York Giants (3-4)
The Giants are in some desperate times coming off 3 consecutive losses and a very ugly loss last week in Washington. The Cowboys have actually won 2 in a row, but lets not get crazy here. They barely squeeked out a 9-7 Monday Night win against a bad Redskins team, and then they beat an equally bad Cardinals team 17-3 last week. The Giants are upset and are going to be on a mission and the Cowboys stand in their way. Despite the absence of Armstead, the Giants Defense should not allow Double Digit points against the Cowboys. The Giants offense needs a breakout game to get going and this should be an overall breakout effort by the Giants, or else they are going to have some serious explaining to do to Coach Fassel.
SCORE: Giants 27 Cowboys 3

New York Jets (4-3) at New Orleans Saints (4-2)
The miracle Jets head into New Orleans for a tough interconference Sunday Night game. Why are they the miracle Jets? Because the way the Jets have played this year, its a miracle they aren't 0-7, no less 4-3. One thing is for sure, if the Jets play like they have during every Quarter of the season, with the exception of the 2nd Half against Miami, the Jets will lose, and probably lose big. The Jets have let some no name and back up running backs light them up for huge days, it could be ugly once Ricky Williams gets a hold of them. I do expect a better performance by the Jets, because you cant underachieve every week, but they are going to need a whole lot more to beat this Saints team.
SCORE: Saints 30 Jets 21

Jacksonville Jaguars (2-4) at Tennesee Titans (2-4)
Oh have the mighty fallen. Just 2 years ago this was the AFC Championship Game, now the Titans are in the midst of a vastly dissapointing season, and the Jaguars are following up a dissapointing season from a year ago, with another one heading that way. The Jags have lost 4 straight, including a game they blew late to Baltimore last week. The Titans were embarassed on Monday Night by the Steelers in a game they may prove that the Titans early season struggles may not be a fluke. With that said, I dont believe the Titans to be a perennial powerhouse anymore, but I do think they will win this game against the Jaguars, who are no better than mediocre themselves. But this game could be very close.
SCORE: Titans 20 Jaguars 14

Baltimore Ravens (4-3) at Pittsburgh Steelers (5-1)
What a great divisional clash this will be on Sunday Afternoon from Heinze Field. If the Steelers win this game, then you will know for absolutely sure that they are for real. They may still be for real, but I dont think they will win this game. The Ravens are up to the challenge, I expect a better game by Randall Cunningham now that he is getting more used to the Raven offense, and the Steelers are still coming off the emotional high of whacking Tennessee on Monday Night. Throw in a short work week for the Steelers as well, and the Ravens pull out a close one.
SCORE: Ravens 20 Steelers 13

Carolina Panthers (1-6) at Miami Dolphins (4-2)
The only chance Carolina has in this game is that Miami is taking them lightly and looking ahead in their schedule. Actually they have no chance, because even if that is the case the Dolphins will win this game. The Panthers proved last week against the Jets that their offense is anemic, especially without Tim Biakabutuka. They cant create points themselves, and against Miami's defense, its going to be a long day for Carolina.
SCORE: Dolphins 24 Panthers 0

New England Patriots (3-4) at Atlanta Falcons (3-3)
Two very similar teams lock up here in Atlanta. Both teams have had key injuries to their most productive offensive players. Drew Bledsoe for the Patriots and Jamal Anderson for the Falcons. Yet despite those hits and not having very good football teams to begin with, these teams have been very competitive and the winner of this game will surely be in the thick of things and considering a serious playoff push. I give the edge to the Falcons here because of the Home Field, the week off, and a slightly better team.
SCORE: Falcons 33 Patriots 24

Tampa Bay Bucs (3-3) at Green Bay Packers (4-2)
Tampa came back with a vengeance last week when they absolutely crushed Minnesota. Green Bay has had a long time to think about their crushing at the hands of Minnesota 2 weeks ago. The Pack will be ready and itching to get back into action. Its not Lambeau Field in December, but its Lambeau Field in November, close enough. Bucs dont play well at Lambeau, I dont expect that to change this time around.
SCORE: Packers 23 Bucs 10

Cleveland Browns (4-2) at Chicago Bears (5-1)
The (4-2) Browns meet the (5-1) Browns, no thats not a misprint. Who would have ever thought that. The Bears pulled off a miraculous comeback win last week against the 49ers to get to 5-1. The Bears feel they are on top of the world now in Chicago. They better not look past this Browns team. The Browns have been equally impressive at 4-2 and are coming off their bye week. I have a feeling that the emotional high's of that stunning win last week might get the better of the Bears, and the Browns will sneak up on them and we are going to have a pair of 5-2 teams walking out of Soldier Field on Sunday.
SCORE: Browns 20 Bears 19

Philadelphia Eagles (3-3) at Arizona Cardinals (2-4)
Last time these two teams met the Cardinals shocked the Eagles at the Vet and won 21-20. Now the Eagles look for their revenge, and I do not expect the Eagles to lose again to the Cardinals, but I dont expect a cakewalk for the Eagles either. They are going to have to earn this victory, and if they think they are going to walk into the desert and be handed a victory, then the same thing that happened to them in the Vet will happen to them again. But Andy Reed will have his team ready to play and revenge will be theirs as they continue their run at holding off the Giants for the Divisional Title.
SCORE: Eagles 24 Cardinals 20

Detroit Lions (0-6) at San Francisco (4-2)
The 49ers may be demoralized after their heartbreaking loss of a week ago. They were tasting 5-1 as they seemed to have it in the bag, but they let it get away. Meanwhile the Lions cant buy a victory, but ever since there embarrasing 35-0 loss to the Rams on Monday Night, the Lions have been very competitive. The Lions are also coming off a game in which they blew a big lead, as the blew a lead to the Bengals in losing their 6th straight. The Losing for the Lions should continue, but it should be a closer game than the spread indicates. I also would not be surprised if Detroit pulls of the upset and gets win #1.
SCORE: 49ers 34 Lions 31 (OT)

Indianapolis Colts (3-3) at Buffalo Bills (1-5)
Are the Colts still the world beating team that looked so dominant the first couple of weeks of the season? No. Are the Colts capable of losing to a team like Buffalo? Absolutely. Will the Colts lose to Buffalo? No. This game will be a true test as to how good the Colts really are, and how much noise they are going to make. Its going to be a test of are they not that bad, rather than are they that good? The Bills played the Colts very tough early in the season in Indianapolis and this one will go down to the wire again, but Manning and James in crunch time should pull out a Colts win.
SCORE: Colts 24 Bills 17

Kansas City Chiefs (1-6) at San Diego Chargers (5-2)
Im still not a huge believer that the Chargers are all that good. Are they better? Absolutely. Are they a good football team? Yeah. Are they as good as their record states? I dont know about that. They still have played a bunch of stiffs, and that doesnt change with this week's opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs. If theres a lousy football team in the NFL, chances are the Chargers have played them, the only difference is, this week the lousy football team of the Kansas City Chiefs are going to walk into Qualcomm Stadium and beat the Chargers.
SCORE: Chiefs 22 Chargers 16

Seattle Seahawks (3-3) at Washington Redskins (2-5)
Maybe Washington isnt so bad afterall after beating the Giants the way they did last week. One thing is for sure, if the Skins put out the same intensity and have the same focus they did last week against the Giants, then they will beat Seattle. Seattle isnt a very scary football team and Marty Schottenheimer's bunch might be ready to make a run and surprise some people after their lousy and embarrasing start.
SCORE: Redskins 24 Seahawks 14

Denver Broncos (4-3) at Oakland Raiders (5-1)
Everybody has been stating that with the parity in the NFL, its like theres the Rams and then there is everybody else. That may not be true, because the Rams may not be best overall complete team in the NFL. That team may in fact be the other team that used to play in Los Angeles. The Raiders. If not for a late Jay Fiedler scramble for a TD to win a game for the Dolphins over the Raiders, the Raiders would be undefeated. They proved how tough of a team they are last week when they thoroughly out played a tough Eagles team on the road. The Broncos were less than impressive last week in beating the Patriots and could have easily lost that game. That game followed 2 road divisional losses at San Diego and Seattle. Well if the Broncos cant win in San Diego and Seattle, then they sure as hell cant win in Oakland on a Monday Night.
SCORE: Raiders 33 Broncos 14

Ok, ill give some more description than i have been giving the past 2 weeks.

Dallas Cowboys at NY Giants
Luckily the Giants are playing in the putrid NFC East or else they might be thinking about committing suicide. With a 3-4 record, this is an obvious must-win for the G-Men. However, Keith Hamilton will see limited action, and Jesse Armstead is not playing, so the defense is weakened. On the Dallas side of the ball, Emmitt will most likely not play either, and Clint Stoener will start as QB. And Ryan Leaf will see some time today. Nuff said

Giants 27, Cowboys 15

NY Jets at New Orleans Saints
The Jets have a 4-3 record, but have to be the weakest 4-3 team in the league right now. Chrebet needs to get the ball thrown to him more often for this team to have success in the air. But that means that Vinny must produce, and i dont see it against New Orleans and their defense. Plus, the Saints are coming off of an emotional win against the overrated Rams in St Louis. This could be close because of a letdown, but i say the saints take it.

Saints 23, Jets 13

Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Titans
Well, the Titans just arent cutting it this year. The Jaguars have a poor run defense, but Eddie George will see limited, if any, action today because of a plethra of injuries. McNair is going to have to carry this team, which isnt saying a lot for the Titans. Their secondary has been subpar at best this year, and the overhyped front 4 has done very little. The Jaguars should eat them up with the passing attack, and will outscore the Titans at Tennessee.

Jaguars 31, Titans 21

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers
This is going to be a hard nosed, gritty football game. What can you say about the Steelers, they dont make mistakes at all. This is a game where the Ravens have to prove that the Steelers arent gonna be the Central champs that easily. However, i believe that the front 5 of pittsburgh will DOMINATE the front 4 of Baltimore, and that the Steelers defense will stop Randall Cunningham. A win for the Steelers in Heinz Ketchup field.

Steelers 24, Ravens 10

Carolina Panthers at Miami Dolphins
If there was ever a time when the Miami defense can get back on track and get a reputation again for being tough, this is the game to do it. Carolina is awful, and could be the worst overall team in football. I predict an asskicking here.

Dolphins 34, Panthers 6

New England Patriots at Atlanta Falcons
This kid Brady has shown some moxy the last few weeks. They said that he is even better than Brian Griese. That remains to be seen with his 4 INT's in the 4th quarter against Denver last week. I think he can rebound against the league's worst pass defense. Maurice Smith for the Falcons should have very good numbers being that the Falcons are going to run all day. I still think the Pats win with more offense.

Pats 31, Falcons 20

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Green Bay Packers
Bucs dont win in Green Bay ever. However, these bucs are so damn inconsistent, you never know. The Packers are coming off a Bye week, which will help them in this game. The Pack feeel like they need to win to keep pace with the Bears and to reestablish their defense, which got lit up against the Vikings.

Packers 24, Bucs 0

Cleveland Browns at Chicago Bears (game of the week)
Who woulda thunk it in the beginning of the year that this would be a huge game. The Bears are banged up at QB with Shane Matthews going instead of Jim Miller. But they have the A-Train, and they have a rock solid defense. Last week proved that they can win even without their defense performing. I think that it will today, but i also think that the Browns will show up to play as well. Tim Couch has the ability to thro downfield as well as scramble, and the Browns defense is one of the best. Its in Soldier field, and i think that will be the difference. Bears go 6-1 and find another way to win.

Bears 18, Browns 17

Philly Eagles at Arizona Cardinals
Wow, 3-3 leads the division. How sad is that. The Eagles, coming off of an assraping by the Raiders, will go to Arizona seeking revenge after the Cardinals embarrassed them at Philly. Jake Plummer knows how to beat Philly, and Arizona isnt as bad as you might think. Call me crazy, but i see Arizona winning this thing.

Cardinals 27, Eagles 24

Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers
Jeff Garcia is banged up, however you could have Steve Bono as QB and it wouldnt matter. The Lions SUCK. Plus the game is in San Fran, which eliminates any chance for an upset in my book. 49ers rebound off of a tough loss with a huge win. BTW, Terrell Owens could have an awesome game, as in 3 TD's and 200+ yards.

49ers 41, Lions 12

Indianapolis Colts at Buffalo Bills
Playing in Buffalo is never an easy task, and the Bills have made strides the last 3 weeks. Rob Johnson showed me something against the Chargers last week in a great game. Plus, with Edgerin James out, the Colts will be a 1 dimensional team. I think that the Bills pull off the upset here and walk away with a win.

Bills 24, Colts 17

Kansas City Chiefs at San Diego Chargers
This game is VERY tricky. If this was in KC, i would pick the Chiefs in an upset. But its in San Diego, so i wont do that. But, it will be close. KC's offense has piced it up lately, Trent Green is starting to get some chemistry going with his WR's. However, there is no stopping Tomlinson and Flutie today.

Chargers 31, Chiefs 14

Seattle Seahawks at Washington Redskins
Dont look now, but the Redskins have won 2 in a row. A small sense of confidence has grown in QB Tony Banks. As bad as i think he is, he does know how to do the play action fake really well. Rod gardner has developed as the go to guy for Banks. Their defense does not impress me at all. The Seahawks...well they are the Seahawks. However, dont be surprised if Shaun Alexander breaks out today. I pick Seattle because they suck less.

Seahawks 27, Redskins 20

Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders
My opinion: Raiders are the best team in football. They were 1 play away from being 6-0 going into this game. The Broncos have been on and off this year, and really have not been the same since McCaffery broke his leg against the Giants. Kennison has been disappointing as his replacement. The Raiders always seem to lose to these guys though, and for some reason, i am not going to pick the Raiders this week. Denver has more to lose than the Raiders do. If Denver loses, they might never see the Raiders in the standings again this year. This game is too important for the Broncos, and they will win it.

Broncos 30, Raiders 24

Its still early, but Giants getting butts kicked by Dallas.

With the way the Jets & Giants are playing, it
looks like once again it may be a long winter in NY.

Im 10-2 picking winners, would have been 11-1 if it wasnt for the Browns collapse. Picked that Chiefs upset.

Im 7-5 against the spread, would have been 8-4 if not for what was a sure lock with the Browns up 21-7 with 30 seconds left and then they blow it and then to add insult to injury, the Bears favored by 5 1/2 score a TD To cover the spread in OT. Ponderous.

Thats Amazing by the Bears to pull off 2 comeback wins like that back to back, and that loss might kill the Browns season, thats going to be a tough one to rebound from.

Yeah, CF, I spoke too soon as to the outcome, but it wasn't very encouraging to see them need overtime against the Boys.

At this time I'm watching the Jets, and I'm hoping I'm not too early again - they might actually win against a good team.

by the way, time to fix your sig.

thats a good job by you Rage. It is very difficult to predict an exact score.

I only predicted 2 exactly right last year. And 1 so far this year with last week's Miami-Seattle game.

Good Win for the Jets tonight although they tried their best to give it away at the end, thank god that nutcase on New Orleans blew it for his team.

Honestly I think the Browns can come back from this. Besides the last minute, the Browns really did take control of that game. One play that no onw is talking about was the play before they scored to get it within 7...on the sideline jumping and somehow keeping his feet inbounds. Unbelievable. Browns vs Steelers next week will be good, considering both teams lost heartbreakers, and they are 2 of the top 3 teams in my opinion in the AFC. Bears vs Pack will be tough, this is the first of 6 straight division games for the Bears. I watched the whole 2nd half of the Bear game, and that atmosphere was incredible, plus Simms and Gumbel really do a great job.

Anyway, to the point of the thread, 6-7, not a good week. As usual of late, ive been losing the close ones, and the upsets i do pick dont happen lol. I feel i give good analysis though, i just have the wrong score. Oh and i have picked 1 exact score last week. VERY tough to do. I was close with Miami vs Carolina this week, but oh well.

Don't count the Tennessee Titans out just yet. Yesterday we saw the effort the Titans need from Steve McNair. The defense has been decimated by injuries, but the young DB's are starting to gel and with Blaine Bishop coming back soon from injury the defense can only get better. They are in the middle of a 6 game stretch vs AFC Central opponents with the Ravens, Bengals, Steelers and Browns coming up. If the offense can get the production they did yesterday and the defense gets the DB's to help out the defensive line more, this team could turn it around and find a way to sneak into the postseason. I don't think the Titans are a powerhouse team as they once were, but I don't think it's time to count them out just yet.

The giant comeback was great to watch. Sure it was only against the Cowboys but to see them just play the way did was great.
The other game I was able to watch was the bears and browns. That was the most amazing game I've seen in.....well since last weeks bears game. What are the chances??? Felt like Deja Vu...
