So, any general league-wide observations about what we've seen transpire in the NHL thus far into the season?

Clearly the biggest surprise of all for anyone outside the Empire State, and even for some of those in it, is the fact that the Isles and Rangers are battling for first place and not the first draft pick.

Despite all the dollars being thrown at free agents if the playoffs were held to day all the Canadian teams would be in.

And then there are definitely some players who are playing hard to get into their country's respective Olympic squads with the name Shanahan popping into my head pretty quickly.

So what's surprised you the most so far?

The fact that Martin Brodeur is killing so many of my fantasy hockey teams single-handedly

How good Carolina is and bad washington is even with Jagr.

calgary and edmonton going neck and neck for first place.

Tried to save a place from the cuts and the scratches
Tried to overcome the complications and the catches
Nothing ever grows and the sun doesn't shine all day
Tried to save myself but myself keeps slipping away

What's surprised me is how Edmonton hangs on without Doug Weight, every year they develope new stars, Carter, Smyth, Comrie this year. They are one hell of a team and have very little money. Also, the Blackhawks are kicking ass this year too.

The Oilers lucked out a little bit with Comrie. His dad owns or owned the B.C. Lions (CFL team - look at me tie that back in there!) but basically lived in Edmonton.

The guy owns furniture stores and everything, so he's a pretty wealthy guy. Turns out though that his kids both play hockey well.

Thankfully for the Oilers, that local connection paid off in spades because he wanted to play for the local team and signed a relatively long-term deal.

The NHLPA was PISSED at him because he signed like two days before he was eligible for unrestricted free agency.

It is definitely nice to see the Oilers continually contend though and not completely devolve into the Montreal Expos of the NHL.

Speaking of Montreal, my team the Canadiens are doing very, very well and look good with the addition of Donald Audette from Dallas.

Pretty funny though, when he was a UFA this summer he wanted 17 million over four years to play in Montreal (tax issues, "non-contending team" etc.) but he took 12 million over four years to play in Dallas. Three months later he's in Montreal - a native son who wants to play for the team and we get him for cheap. NICE!

i honestly think that the strangest thing has been detroit. i mean, they always do well, and with the big signings they had in the off season it was almost certain to be another typical wings year, but 20-3 is unreal. all of the old guys are helping out, all of the younger guys are flying, hasek's kicking ass. they're working really well as a unit right now.

I do wonder, with all the potential Olympians on the team, if they will slow down and run out of gas come the playoffs?

But yes, amazing thus far - Shanahan has been on FIRE!

Yeah but remember in 1996, the Redwings won a League Record 60 games, and then lost to Colorado in the Western Conference Finals.

Thats the great thing about Hockey and keeps it more interesting than say the NBA. Anything can happen. Its not like the NBA, where I can tell you right now, the Lakers are winning the NBA Title, no need to play the rest of the 6 months.

The Redwings can win 70 games, they wont be guaranteed a cup. Run in to a Hot Goaltender and see your season go down the drain.

I also forgot to mention that the Coyotes are in the Pacific division race. They lost Tkachuk & Roenick and have only a prospect in Shane Doan. Goaltending hasn't been the best but Burke is still carrying them, it surprised me how well they are doing with little talent.

From my Buffalo perspective: The Sabres are doing so poorly without Hasek's leadership, not his goaltending... Biron is doing fine. Actually, this is not a surprise to me. I am a Dom fan.

Hasek with a disgusting GAA and Save%, yet the Red Wings have only lost 4 games.

Isles and Rangers actually playing good.

Calgary kicking ass by far is the biggest surprise, followed by Chicago.

Another Buffalo thing: Dwayne Roloson becoming the man in Minnesota outsing Manny "the man" Fernandez.

Talk about the Wild moving.

Colorado last in their division.

The cat playing like he did in Vancouver.

Finally, what league did Jamoir go to? Was it the IHL, UHL, Sweden? I haven't heard his name mentioned at all.

He's in Washington, I have also noticed how he's sucking in Was. without Mario and Lemieux sucks without Jagr. It's weird. I am surprised to see the Leafs doing so good and the Devils doing so bad.

Im not, even though it pisses me off to no end, the Devils are doin horrible this year with Mogilny not being there. They have to find some way to come out of this slump.
