WFAN reporting that Mets & Yankees have completed deal sending Robin Ventura for David Justice.

I understand this from the Yankee point of view. Ventura didn't hit well last year, but still got on base via walk, hits lefty (always good at YS) and plays good defensive 3b. this gives Yankees a 1 year stopgap until they feel Drew Henson is ready.

I don't understand this from the Mets point of view. It weakens mets at 3B, and even though Justice is better than what they have now in OF, there are plenty of OF's available.

Once again, Yankees seem to be acting smarter than Mets.

Here's a snippet from an AP article that could explain it a bit:
The trade satisfies needs for both teams. With the retirement of Scott Brosius, the Yankees were in need of a stopgap at third base until heralded prospect Drew Henson is ready to take over.

The Mets struggled offensively last season and scored the fewest runs in baseball. They were also second-to-last in the NL in home runs. Mets right fielders hit .240 with just 15 homers and 61 RBIs last season.

Justice will provide the Mets with the left-handed power hitter they've been seeking to protect Mike Piazza. Justice has 294 career homers, including a career-high 41 in 2000 for Cleveland and the Yankees.
Justice did poorly last year, and with Brosius retiring, it makes sense to trade these two.

Are you saying the the Yanks are ripping off Robin? Hoo hoo?

I would have traded Ventura for a X-Box, so I dont mind getting a guy who can hit 30+ Homeruns in return.

Obviously the Mets arent done, and are going to go out and get either a 1st Baseman (Vaughn,Martinez) 2nd Baseman (Alomar, Boone) or 3rd Baseman (Cirillo, Rolen). They will be alright there. They got rid of Ventura, now if only somebody will take Zeile off our hands.

And I dont care that Ventura is going to be a left handed bat at Yankee Stadium. It doesnt matter when he grounds out to 2nd, 9 out of 10 times.

But of course now that Ventura will put the pinstripes on, he will suddenly find his bat speed, and hit 40 Homeruns and hit .300. Hopefully that does not happen.

FB,
I hope your right and Mets bring in big time 2b, 3b, or 1b.

The Mo Vaughn rumor would make this interesting indeed. I'm afraid they are going to play an infield of zeile, ordonez, alfonzo and relaford., which would truly suck

Justice would seem to be better offensively, but if you look at 2001 ventura actually was at least as good if not better(Justice .333 OBP, .430 SLG, Ventura.359 OBP .419), and at least he can help defensively.
of course, 2000 Justice was way ahead, and Ventura was slow as shit on the bases.

First off teh Mets will not get Tino martinez because 1st base is Piazza's ultimate position probably after this season.

Justice cannot play a full season in the outfield. He is best now at DH.

I think Ventura is a good deal for the yankees. If he can't find himself hitting behind Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Jason Giambi, and Jorge Posada, Shane Spencer he never will. The Yankees are teh perfect team for him and hopefully he will get back to where he once was.

I like the deal. I think this could help the Mets. Ventura's health problems seem to run a lot deeper than Justice's. I think if Justice can stay healthy he could be provide some leadership and stability to the outfield cycle that Valentine is known for using. Hopefully this will create a much more standard & productive lineup.

This deal helps out both teams, but it's easy to see how it may cause problems in the future.
Both have health problems and when they get into a slump, they really get into a slump.

My sentiments exactly.

I like the deal. The Mets will miss Robin in the clubhouse. Though I think Froy is right. They have gained some leadership in a position other than the infield. He may be able to help people like Payton and Timo in becoming true major leaguers. I just pray he appreciates Bobby V's style of managing. Bobby likes to give people a rest every once and awhile. In this case I think Justice will appreciate it. He needs his rest during the season to prevent injuries. I am looking forward to Justice playing at least 140 games, hitting .300, 25-30 homers, and over 100 RBI's. If he can do that, this will prove to be a trade that was well worth it.

Though as FB said, there is always that Met curse and that Yankee luck. If a player leaves the Mets he plays great. If a lacking player goes to the Yankees, he becomes a star.

I can careless, as long as Justice produces for us. I am hoping they go after either a free agent or at least try to trade for a Mo Vaughn or a Jeromy Burnitz. I don't like to get into that part. Nobody knows what they are going to do, and I sure as hell am not going to make any predictions that will prove false in the end. All I can say is Let's go Mets! :)

I think that the interesting thing to see is going to be how they shuffle the infield. Can they move Zeile? Will they sign a sign a solid firstbaseman or possibly let Mark Johnson get some starting time? Will they move Fonzie back to 3rd or make a deal for a new gold glove? Will they let Desi play 2nd if they don't find a new 2nd baseman? There's a lot of moves that they can make, it will be a very intriguing few months.

I have heard rumors of the Mets maybe going after Brett Boone. This would be a huge mistake. I don't think there is anyway he can produce the same numbers he did in 2001. He is a one hit wonder and will not duplicate last season.

As for them going out and getting another gold glover. I don't think they need to. I would like to see Fonzie go back to third, put Desi at second. If they could possibly deal Zeile that would be a plus. I like the notion of having Mark Johnson playing first base. He might just be an intimidating left-handed bat in the lineup. There is always the possibility of them picking up Burnitz, who can play first base.

The bottom line is, we have not solidified the outfield yet, Justice is just one part of it. We need to go after Roger Cedeno. Ofcourse we would have to find a way to trade Payton, but that's all in Steve Phillips hands. It is definitely going to be fun to see what he comes up with.
