LMAO! These new guys didn't have control of the team 24 hours yet and they fired the idiot already... They must be dancing in the streets in Boston. Too bad for them they still won't make it to the World Series.

New Red Sox Owners Fire Duquette

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Dan Duquette was fired Thursday as general manager of the Boston Red Sox, less than 24 hours after the historic, hard-luck franchise was bought by new owners.

His former assistant, Mike Port, will be the interim general manager.

In his eight-year tenure, Duquette grew to be one of the most polarizing figures in Boston sports, guiding the team with a robotic style that never quite clicked with fans who are among the most passionate in baseball.

New team president Larry Lucchino and owners John Henry and Tom Werner met with Duquette in his hotel to give him the news on Thursday morning. Duquette scheduled a news conference for later in the day.

"This decision was not an easy one to make, and we have nothing but good personal feelings for Dan," Lucchino said. "We are also unanimous in our feeling of gratitude for the many contributions that Dan Duquette has made to the Boston Red Sox. We wish him well in what we're sure will be a long and successful baseball career."

Duquette will continue to be paid until Jan. 26, 2004, as part of the $4.5 million, three-year contract extension given to him by the old owners.

It was unclear how long Port would be interim GM.

"It could take a few weeks or a few months," Lucchino said. "It is a key long-term decision that should not be dictated by a clock or a calendar."

Port, 56, was general manager of the California Angels from 1984 to 1991, a period that included the 1986 last-inning playoff loss to the Red Sox. He was the president of the Arizona Fall League in its first season, then joined the Red Sox as assistant GM in 1993 and became vice president of baseball operations in 1996.

"I am ready and prepared to accept this responsibility," he said. "It is an honor to be given this opportunity to help continue to shape a club that we hope will win a world championship for Boston and New England."

Manager Joe Kerrigan, who went 17-26 after Jimy Williams was fired in August, will keep his job for now. But the new owners have said that other changes are coming in the scouting department and front office.

Duquette was absent on Wednesday when Henry and Lucchino leaned out of an office window at City of Palms Park and gave two thumbs up to reporters watching from the press box. They had just received the phone call from Boston telling them the deal was done, ending seven decades of ownership by the Yawkey family and its trust.

The $660 million purchase — plus $40 million in assumed debt — includes Fenway Park and 80 percent of New England Sports Network. The price more than doubled the previous record for a baseball franchise — $323 million paid by Larry Dolan for the Cleveland Indians in 2000.

The Red Sox went 656-574 record under Duquette, setting franchise attendance records but winning the AL East just once. They also earned wild-card berths in 1998 and 1999, advancing to the second round only once in three playoff appearances.

Duquette grew up in Dalton, Mass., went to college at Amherst and landed his dream job when he left the small-market Montreal Expos in 1994 to run the Red Sox. He had a reputation as a shrewd evaluator of talent, and with his first draft pick he chose shortstop Nomar Garciaparra.

Duquette's greatest coup was acquiring Pedro Martinez from the salary-dumping Expos and locking him up with a long-term deal. His biggest mistake was saying Roger Clemens was "in the twilight of his career" before the three-time Cy Young Award winner left as a free agent in 1996.

Clemens won three more Cy Young Awards and a World Series ring that no Red Sox player has earned since 1918.

Nice head Deek!!

This is good news for Boston, but too little too late in my opinion.

Duquette is another guy who I think got way too much blame. Was he a good GM - no, but not a horrible one either.

He drafted Garciaparra, stole Martinez, put together a pretty decent team. He also screwed it up by not dumping Everett when his value was high, f'ing up the Jimy Williams situation, and not bringing in enough pitching behind Martinez.

As for Clemens, no one thought he would be able to return his previous sucess. At the time, Clemens could easily have gone the way of Dwight Gooden (not the drug abuse part, the loss of success). In retrospect it was a horrible decision, and a poor way to treat a former team hero, but that is easy to see now.

Fuck Clemens.

The last four years he was with Boston, he wasn't even a .500 pitcher. He just didn't give a shit anymore. He would show up a week late and 20 pounds overweight to every spring training. He SUCKED the last few years he was with Boston, becuase he just didn't try. It was a horrible way to treat a former "hero" but it was that way becuase the former "hero" stopped being a pro and just pissed and moaned for four years and gave up.

Part of that is becuase Clemens is a complete asshole, but part of it was becuase of the fact that Duquette was Cancer to this team. He had the worst interpersonal skills ever. He ran Vaughn and Clemens out of town. He had his assistant call Mike Stanley to tell him "not to show up for practice" because he'd been cut. He just created such a horrible atmosphere around that team. He made some good moves, yes, but everyone hated him, and hated each other becuase of how cryptic and retarded he was.

Everyone in Boston has been praying for this day. If Nomar actually speaks out and says something bad, you know shit must be REAL bad, becuase he never talks.

I agree with the first part of this statement but not the second. Duquett did offer him a 3 year contract. Clemens chose to play the FA market and got a higher demand else where. Could it have been a better offer? Obviously yes. But this thing happens all the time now without a second thought. Ala- Randy Johnson(traded only after contract negotiations failed),AROD,Ken Griffy Jr, Jason Giambi,Wade Boggs, Mo Vaughn,Jeff Nelson (just had to put a yankee in, theres not many),Mike Mussina, and I think you get my point.
At the time he was a 1 time Cy Young award(i think, or was it two?)with what looked to be an aging arm and declining skills. That offseason he really abopted his new work out program. Which is what got his carrer back into first gear.

I just have major problems with a guy who fires his coach in the middle of a pennant race, and notice how well they did without him. If there's problems in the clubhouse, send Everett home, don't bring in a lame duck coach for the last few weeks of the season.

Thanks to Brokenjaw for the sigpic

Moss should have given the ball to his coaches to spike, or at least invited them onto the field to take part in the celebration, because they were the ones who made that score possible. But don't tell that to Randy, it would only take away from the glory he believes he deserves for being as great as he is. Click here for the whole article

Ferret,
If you read what I wrote, I also thought he f'd up by firing Jimy williams for Kerrigan. He had no ability to deal with the public, or for that matters with his team. It just seems to me that I can think of at least half a dozen teams in worse shape than Bo Sox.

As for never letting anything die, check out this article on ESPN:

Clemens happy that Duquette let him leave

When Clemens left Boston he had won 3 Cy Youngs with the Red Sox. He has won 3 more since he left, 2 in Toronto, and 1 in NY.

Red Sox were in much worse shape before Duquette. Yeah he made lots of mistakes but he made the team a hell of a lot better than it was.
