Cowart will be reunited with Cottrell

For months the Bills and middle linebacker Sam Cowart have argued in negotiations over how much risk the team should assume in a long-term contract following a season in which he partially tore an Achilles tendon.

The AFC East rival Jets were willing to take more of the risk and will now put Cowart, a Pro Bowler in 2000, against the Bills twice a year. Cowart agreed to a six-year, $31 million contract that included a $1.8 million signing bonus and a play-time option bonus in 2003 that could be as much a $6 million.

Cowart will be reunited with his former Bills defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell.

The Bills had been offering Cowart a $5 million a year contract that included a $2 million signing bonus, but one of the problems is that the Bills wanted Cowart to have a $1.5 million base salary reduced to around $300,000 if he were injured.

The Jets will pay Cowart a $1.2 million base salary along with the $1.8 million salary and there will be no reduction if there is any injury.

Three of the top leg doctors in the country have said that Cowart is recovering well from his Achilles tear and should be completely healthy by the start of the season. The doctors indicated that because the tear was only partial, it should heal better. Cowart has only about two more months remaining in his rehab from the injury.

Cowart, 26, is considered one of the best playmaking linebackers in the NFL.

Hey he's not breathing. Don't people usually breathe?

Good move...This makes losing another OL starter yesterday easier to swallow......They better have one hell of a draft.

Gang Green's been very busy. It seems that Edwards is using this as an opportunity to shape the team his way.

The loss that I'm worried about is Muir. He is as good a O-Line coach as there is.

Fabini was the stud, and he was re-signed. Jenkins is a loss, but I think Machado did well in the past.

Now let's sign a top Defensive Tackle.

don't need to. Ferguson will be back and better than ever. They could also draft one in the 2nd-3rd round and get a quality guy. The Cowart signing is huge, and if all the LBs stay healthy we will have the premier unit in the NFL. Safeties are in good shape with Garnes, imo, being a younger version of Victor Green. Only position I'm worried about is cornerback - but that could be solved with a trade for Donnie Abraham. The only other thing I would even think about doing is trying to acquire that elusive tall wide receiver, but then again Kevin Swayne may fit the bill with fresh legs this year.

Jimbo,
I hope Ferguson comes back and is the deal, but remember, Groh sat him when he was healthy. I think he can be erratic if not motivated.

Looks like Jets will gamble on former Titans DT Josh Evans, 29, who had a career-high 5 1/2 sacks last season, could provide an interior pass rush. But Evans, who was suspended the entire 2000 season, is one strike away from a lifetime ban.

If the interior of the line is solid, maybe Shaun Ellis will come around & Join Abraham.

Cornerback is questionable, but last year Glenn & Coleman underperformed big time. A good rush always helps hide cover weaknesses.

I don't want to go crazy with "Big Receiver" issue. It caused them to overpay for Hatchette.
Chrebet and Coles have shown they can do the job, A full season of Santana Moss should help, and as you mention Kevin Swayne is a very useful receiver. If a good Tall receiver falls into their hands, great, but don't go stretching.

As strange as it seems, I'm not confident about losing Tupa. He was overpaid last year, but he has been a good punter and extremely useful as a holder. Those aren't irreplaceable spots, but they are important.
