Barber unhappy with Strahan's salary stance

--------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

Michael Strahan is unhappy with the New York Giants. Now teammate Tiki Barber is angry at Strahan.

Barber lashed out at Strahan on Wednesday in an interview with the New York Post, saying his teammate "should just be quiet."

Strahan, who just set the single-season sack record with 22½, refused to accept a proposed seven-year $58 million deal, at least partially because the signing bonus was to be split in two. The proposed bonus would have Strahan receiving $10 million this year and $7 million next season. Strahan reportedly wanted the $17 million all at once so the Giants would not have a chance to cut him before giving him the second part of the payment.

Upset with the way negotiations are going, Strahan also has vowed to leave the Giants after his current contract expires in one year. He said the Giants are not doing enough to be a winning team. After making it to Super Bowl XXXV, the Giants struggled with a 7-9 mark despite Strahan's record-setting season.

“ I don't know if he realizes how much $17 million is. That is absolutely ridiculous, to turn that down. ” — Tiki Barber

"I don't know if he realizes how much $17 million is," Barber told the Post. "That is absolutely ridiculous, to turn that down. He's already the highest-paid defensive player in the league. He's already making more than most quarterbacks. I find it hard to believe this whole deal hinged on if he was going to get $17 or $10 million this year. I find that hard to believe. That's the value of my entire contact, that's why I have no sympathy. You're telling me that's not good enough for two years? Give me a break."

Barber, wide receiver Amani Toomer and safety Jason Sehorn all have split signing bonuses in their contracts. Strahan is the only Giant who has refused to get the bonus that way, according to the newspaper.

Barber, the most versatile and perhaps most valuable member of the Giants' offense, said that Strahan is being too selfish.

"He's got to be able to give a little to get a lot, and he's not willing to give at all," Barber told the Post. "Michael says, 'I just want the Giants fans to know that the Giants aren't doing what they say they're doing.' We don't need all that. It hurts me as a Giant and as a Giants fan.

"He basically said he doesn't trust the organization," Barber continued. "When they made the deal with me it wasn't an agreement between (GM) Ernie (Accorsi) and I that the money would come through. It was from the owner of the team. My agent warned me about it, but we had the promise of Mr. (Wellington) Mara, who typifies integrity in this league. I felt confident if there was someone I could trust, it was him. It makes me mad. If you can't trust the Giants, who can you trust?"

As for Strahan's implication that the Giants are not interested in putting together a title contender, Barber again was critical of his teammate. "I know they care about winning," Barber told the Post. "You got to realize no single player, I don't care how good you are, how many sacks you had or how many yards you've rushed for, is bigger than the team, period. Michael is not thinking about the team; he's thinking about himself."

Damn straight Tiki should be pissed. Actually Sehorn is pissed too, he was in the Star Ledger begging people not to make it Jason vs Michael, but he was saying he doesnt agree about what Strahan is doing.

My response to Strahan...GET THE FUCK OFF THE TEAM!! We offered you enough money, and we are in cap trouble, if you wont take it, then play the last year of your contract and dont let the door hit you on the ass next year.

I'm liking Tiki more and more each day.

He goes out on the field, plays his best, and leaves it on the field. When Tiki was the Giants MVP when they went to the Super Bowl, you didn't hear any contract whining. The Giants gave him an offer, he could have probably gotten more, but he took it. He didnt whine about being th ebest player on the team and not being paid like it. Tiki understands what its all about. Strahan turned down more money than anyone else will give him and took shots at the franchise. Now, he wont even get an offer for half that next year.

Here is the NYPOST article:

quote:

He is outraged and disgusted by so much of what Michael Strahan said regarding the Giants, but most of all, Tiki Barber feels sickened about the way Strahan's rip job of the team offering him a king's ransom reflects on all players.

"We get a bad rap as athletes wanting money all the time," Barber said yesterday. "Michael is typifying that when he should just be quiet."

In an emotional, exclusive interview with The Post, Barber defended the Giants and lambasted Strahan for what Barber views as greed gone awry. As the team's top offensive weapon and one of its unquestioned leaders, Barber has a stake in the well-being of the franchise and could not bear to hear the myriad of wild accusations Strahan tossed at the Giants.

"He's got to be able to give a little to get a lot, and he's not willing to give at all," Barber said. "Michael says, ‘I just want the Giants fans to know that the Giants aren't doing what they say they're doing.' We don't need all that. It hurts me as a Giant and as a Giants fan."

It is rare when a player will criticize another's business dealings, but Barber was unafraid to take on the Pro Bowl defensive end. Strahan last week stated he expected this to be his final year with the Giants because negotiations had broken off after he rejected a seven-year, $58 million deal. Strahan's main beef was that the $17 million signing bonus was split, $10 million this year and $7 million the next, and he feared he'd be cut before ever receiving the $7 million.

Nonsense, Barber contends. A year ago, Barber signed a six-year, $25 million contract and his $7 million bonus was paid out in two equal payments of $3.5 million, one last year and one this month. Similar arrangements were made with Jason Sehorn and Amani Toomer. Strahan is the only player who balked.

"He basically said he doesn't trust the organization," Barber said. "When they made the deal with me it wasn't an agreement between [GM] Ernie [Accorsi] and I that the money would come through. It was from the owner of the team. My agent warned me about it, but we had the promise of Mr. [Wellington] Mara, who typifies integrity in this league. I felt confident if there was someone I could trust, it was him. It makes me mad. If you can't trust the Giants, who can you trust?"

Point by point, Barber blasted Strahan's case. Strahan said, "I don't feel like [the Giants] want to be competitive." Barber counters that if Strahan had agreed to a cap-friendly deal, the Giants would be able to get involved in signing free agents.

"We lost some good players this year and we had to, because we're not getting cooperation," Barber said. "He definitely is hindering the process. He's not helping it by acting the way he's acting and saying the things he's saying."

As for Strahan's contention that the Giants are not interested in assembling a winning team, Barber again shot down his teammate. "I know they care about winning," Barber said. "You got to realize no single player, I don't care how good you are, how many sacks you had or how many yards you've rushed for, is bigger than the team, period. Michael is not thinking about the team; he's thinking about himself."

Finally, Barber attempted to add a dose of common sense into the sordid situation.

"I don't know if he realizes how much $17 million is," Barber said.

Strahan, who just set the single-season sack record with 22½,

I think this should have said Michael Strahan and Brett Favre set the single season sack record.

I hope all Giants fans boo this prick off the field for every single play he does not get a sack.

I'm not a Giants fan, but after reading that, I am a Tiki Barber fan. I knew he was good on the field, but I now see that he is a great team player as well. I just hope that if Strahan becomes a free agent, the Bengals and Broncos do not sign him (even though he is good, he seems like a jerk).

Can you believe this crap now about Keith Hamilton talking down to Tiki? Keith is of course backing up the greedy Strahan, saying that the defense has been carrying the team for years, and that Mike deserves the money. He stated that Barber doesnt know how it feels to be in the trenches and that he should shut his mouth. I dont have the article, but i do know it was in the star ledger on thursday.

So, it is pretty much Jason Sehorn and Tiki Barber vs Michael Strahan and Keith Hamilton in this war of words. Not good for my team at all :(.

The bright news is that we signed Shaun Williams today to a 4 year deal for 5 mil a year. Maybe Strahan can learn something from that deal.

This is my team and I think Strahan is a great player that I would hate to lose, but enough is enough already.

How fucking greedy can people be? Since when isn't $10 million enough? I just love these assholes who say "Well, I've got a mortgage and a family to provide for." So do I you stupid motherfucker, but you don't see me needing multi-millions of dollars to do so!

Bottom line is this. I've said it plenty of times before and I'll say it again. You get paid to play a GAME. You have talent that allows you do do what millions of us can only dream about and would kill for the opportunity for. Now, either take the goddamn money that was offered to you and PLAY, or get the fuck out!
