NBA May Use Instant Replay Next Year
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Instant replay, part of the NHL and NFL for several years, might be used in the NBA as early as next season.

``I'm really ready to support the realization of a system that gets the referees off the hook,'' NBA commissioner David Stern said Tuesday night at Arco Arena before the Los Angeles Lakers faced the Sacramento Kings in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals.

Deputy Commissioner Russ Granik said the league will make a proposal to the Competition Committee on the matter at a meeting in Chicago next week.

Lakers forward Samaki Walker made a 3-pointer as the first half ended in Game 4 of this series Sunday in Los Angeles, but replays showed he hadn't released the ball when time expired.

It was the latest of several mistakes in these playoffs involving last-second shots revealed by instant replay.

Robert Horry's 3-pointer just before the final buzzer gave the Lakers a 100-99 victory to even the best-of-seven series 2-2. Walker's shot cut the Kings' halftime lead to 65-51.

``There are certain things that are too hard for the human eye to see,'' Stern said at an impromptu news conference. ``We want to help our referees.''

Stern said it was determined Walker's 3-pointer was released .07 seconds late.

``It's not so simple to judge whether a shot got off,'' Granik said. ``There's a lot of things to be resolved. We're going to make a proposal to the Competition Committee next week, put something out there for discussion. There are issues about equipment, where you're going to get your feeds.''
This would definetely be a good thing for the sport. We sometimes see referees convening for several minutes after an iffy buzzer-beater now-a-days so it wouldn't really disrupt anything. It's worked real well in college.

"Continue with the gentle, modulated motion of the head."

GodBlessAmerica.
