With alot of talk coming out of the Kings - Lakers series that the NBA and the refs conspired against the Kings, what are the Nets chances in this series. The conspirists use Game 6 as the example, where I think the lakers took 27 free throws in the 4th quarter. Game 7, I will admit, the Kings could of and should of won, but they couldn't hit the ocean while standing on the beach.

Does anyone think the Nets have a chance? Does the NBA want the perennial losers, the Swampdragons, errr the Nets to represent them as NBA champs.

I have suck hatred for everything about the Lakers. I hate Phil Jackson and his cocky condescending attitude. he thinks he is the greatest coach in NBA history. He walked into it when the Bulls were already good with Doug Collins. They already had Pippen and Jordan and were already heading to the top. And now the Lakers, with the 2 best players in Kobe and Shaq. The team would have won the NBA title if not for their sheer hatred for Del Harris and losing in the Western conference finals. Phil Jackson is a great motivator and a good coach. I said good coach not great coach.

Shaq and Kobe. 2 of the biggest fucking crybabies in the NBA today. David Stern and the NBA basically suckle them. They travel constantly, they foul constantly and they bitch and moan constantly.

I am a Knicks fan, but I want the Nets to beat the living shit out of the snobby fuckheads in the lakers in as few games as possible. I just know if the Nets can steal a game or 2, Kobe and Shaq and Phil Jackson will bitch and moan to the NBA and as soon as that happens, you know the lakers will 3-peat and Pat Riley will become a millionaire again for copyrighting 3-peat for all merchandising.

Perception more harmful to NBA than reality

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The NBA has a problem.

The problem is not that there is a conspiracy to put the Lakers (or, in their day, the Bulls) in the Finals, or that playoff games are fixed.

The problem is that so many otherwise rational people think there is a conspiracy to put the Lakers (or, in their day, the Bulls) in the Finals, and that playoff games are fixed. The problem is that the very teams who compete now state openly that they expect to get screwed in important games.

For 15 years, I've listened to crackpots tell me how the league is no different than pro wrestling, that I should be ashamed to cover a sport where the results have been determined in advance by a cabal of power-mad men (the list is never the same but frequently includes David Stern, NBC Sports President Dick Ebersol, the heads of various Fortune 500 companies, and once -- only once -- Suzanne Somers). I laugh to myself, for there is nothing I can do to help these people.

And then comes a game like Friday's Game 6 of the Western Conference finals. There is nothing I can say that will explain 27 free throws for the Lakers in the fourth quarter -- an amount staggering in its volume and impact on the game. It gave me pause. How can you explain it? How can you explain a game where Scot Pollard fouls out when he's two feet from Shaquille O'Neal, or that Doug Christie is called for a ridiculous touch foul just as Chris Webber spikes Kobe Bryant's drive to the hoop, or that Mike Bibby is called for a foul deep in the fourth quarter after Bryant pops him in the nose with an elbow? Regardless of whether the fouls were called correctly or not, they put a black mark on what has been as compelling, dramatic and well-played of a series as I can recall in recent years.

What gives one pause, though, is not that these fouls were called against the Kings in this one game. The pause comes because these fouls were called against the Kings in Los Angeles two days after O'Neal fouled out of Game 5 in Sacramento -- the same game in which Bryant was saddled with five fouls. How can consecutive games be called so diametrically opposite -- with such dramatic differences in the impact on the respective teams?

This is my problem: the 180-degree turns from day to day in the playoffs. One day, Shaq is allowed to drop his shoulder and knock any defender senseless. The very next day, if Shaq looks at Bibby, he gets the foul. How can it be the exact opposite of what it was the game before? And I think people pick up on that, and think something is not right.

I am not speaking here of your garden variety fan who roots for his or her team passionately, sometimes nonsensically, and who will thus create boogeymen to explain his team's losses where none exist. Nor of the poor souls who have to assign the state of their own wretched lives to some unseen, omniscient force. Nor of the professional cranks and nutjobs who earn a living by finding gunmen in grassy knolls -- no, they fired from the bridge above! No, wait -- it was from the sewer below! But of ordinary folks who pay their taxes and hold themselves responsible for their lot in life.

After Game 6, I went out to dinner in L.A. with a couple of sportswriters and three or four other folks who aren't in the business. Each one of us at the table had a college degree. None of us had a dog in this Lakers-Kings fight. But us Sports Guys wanted to see if we were overreacting. So we asked the woman with the business degree who has season tickets to an NBA team (not the Lakers, not the Kings) what her immediate reaction was after watching Friday.

"They stole the game from the Kings," she said, matter of factly.

The next morning, I call for a bellman for help with the bags. The door is open five seconds when he says, and I'm paraphrasing here because I don't generally quote bellmen, "What was up with that game last night? I mean, I'm a Laker fan, so I appreciate the calls. But I don't want to win that way. It was like Chris Webber was saying, 'I can't win, so why should I play hard?' "

Which, if the bellman had been in the Kings' locker room on Friday, was exactly the demeanor he would have seen from Webber. His lip was literally quivering, he was so angry. He spoke in guarded tones about how "we're still the Sacramento Kings" and how he had been told it would be impossible to beat the Lakers Friday. "I was warned," he muttered. Twenty feet away, Vlade Divac was asked if he played O'Neal any differently than he had the first five games. "Of course," Divac smirked. "I thought 'Tonight, I will play him very aggressive and foul him every time.' "

You can dismiss this as sour grapes from the losing team. But this has gone on for so long in so many losing locker rooms over the years, it is now part of the postgame procedure: Winning coach compliments spirit of losing team, losing coach laments horrible officiating. It is so matter-of-fact as to be a cliche: We got the calls tonight; they'll get the calls tomorrow. Only in the NBA does a coach who's won eight championships whine more than a stuck engine valve about refs. You may hear Lou Pinella rant about the strike zone on Monday, but he's not still at it on Thursday. Officials blow calls every Sunday in the NFL, but that league makes sure you know about it on Tuesday, while the NBA still muzzles all discussion about its officials' performance.

So why do NBA coaches do it?

Because it appears to work.

When Phil Jackson gripes about the Knicks and Pistons not allowing flow and freedom in a game -- when he says that Dennis Rodman is being persecuted; when he says that Shaq isn't being allowed the same freedoms a man six inches shorter receives -- he's not talking to the guy or gal that asked him the question in the news conference, and he's not talking to you, dear reader. He's talking to the three people in the striped shirts who will call the next game.

Please understand: I think NBA refs have the hardest job officiating of all the major sports, and that includes the guys who do it on skates. Basketball -- and pro basketball in particular -- has more subjective calls in a half than you'll see in a season of football. Block or charge? Did he jump straight up, or come over the back? Is he hooking, or using leverage? And I think because the game is so subjective to call, no one knows what to expect night in and out.

The NBA also suffers because of the nature of the game. One dominant player out of five will necessarily have more impact than one out of nine in baseball (including the pitcher, who only plays once every four or five days) or one of 11 in football. So someone like Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson or Larry Bird or Isiah Thomas -- or Shaq -- tends to win more often than in baseball or football. This tends to lead to the same teams winning championships -- which creates the impression that this is desired by the Commish, the networks and advertisers looking for common themes, one-name superstars and storylines to sell to the public.

(Of course, the public is as hypocritical on this as it is on so many things. The very people who say they're sick of seeing the same faces win year after year in the NBA are the same folks who stayed away in droves, and didn't watch, during the league's most democratic era -- the 1970s, when talented if nondescript teams like Golden State, Washington, Portland and Seattle won championships.)

I acknowledge I am at a loss about what to do. The Commish acknowledged last week that the game has gotten, in some ways, too quick for the refs, which is why he's now behind some form of instant replay. The Competition Committee will receive a proposal from the league for replay at its meeting this week. And here, the NBA can learn from the NFL, which is always perceived as tinkering with its game to improve officiating and make the game more pleasant for fans.

Of course, the NFL often does no such thing. But people think it does.

Perception is reality.

I'm a Celtics fan, bit I wanna see the Nets demolish the Lakers.

I was watching Lakers/Kings game 7 at my friends house. He is a HUGE Knicks fan, so he was obviously rooting for the Kings. But very early in the game, the Kings missed 5 consecutive free throws. I turned to my friend and said, "The game is over. No matter how close it is, Lakers are winning this game." Anytime you shoot 16-30 on free throws and 2-20 from the 3 point range, you deserve to lose.

BTW, can anyone please explain to me why they even looked at Doug Christie as an option?

I'm not a big basketball fan, but I watched Game 7 anyway. What I'd like to know is what was the fucking thinking behind keeping Christy in the game? He couldn't hit a fucking shot to save his life last night.

I completely agree, keeping Christie in the game was a bad move, especially considering he came in for Bobby Jackson with 4:00 left in the 4th. But I'm guessing the reason was defensive purposes. He did a pretty decent job guarding Bryant.. but still, there's no reason for him to even be touching the ball on the offensive end. Just get the ball to Bibby and get out of the way. Especially when Bryant was guarding him with 5 fouls.

after watching game 6, i knew there was no reason to watch game 7...kobe and shaq can basically commit murder on the court and get away with it...there was no way pollard OR divac should have fouled out...not a chance! i did watch game 7, and once i saw kobe on bibby, while he had 5 fouls, you knew he wouldn't foul out...no way would a ref make that call. i don't want to cry conspiracy as a knicks fan, but the officiating for this series was worse than islanders/toronto...i feel bad for webber and the kings, the league took the championship away from them.

Your absolutely right. The League took the Championship right away from them. It had absolutely nothing to do with Webber playing scared and not wanting the ball in the 4th Quarter and Overtime. It had nothing to do with Sacramento missing 15 foul shots. Its all the League's fault.

Since when did everybody turn into Alonzo Mourning? Stop your fucking bitching. I hate the Lakers too and I would love to see them lose to anybody. But stop blaming everybody and their mother why the Kings lost the series. The Kings lost the series because they didnt do what they needed to do to win. They blew a 24 point lead in Game 4, the Refs didnt do that. They got totally outplayed in Game 1, and They were pittiful down the stretch in Game 7. They have nobody to blame but themselves, lets stop bitching about the refs already.

francine, explain Game 6 and how the lakers had 27 foul shots in the 4th quarter. Explain to me that the Divac foul the fouled him out was a foul. Yes, Sacramento deserved to lose game 7. They blew it and they could not shoot for shit. But you know the NBA wanted the lakers in the finals.

Are the refs perfect? No

They are going to make bad calls obviously, The Kings have nobody to blame but themselves for losing the series, they had plenty of oppurtunitites to get the job done and they failed. Case Closed.

I cant fucking stand the color comentary tonight. Why in gods fucking name is Bill Walton getting more air time? Just because the other guy (i forgot his name) had to attend a graduation?

I just had to put the game on mute and listen to music. Hell i'd listen to a vos cd on repeat 10 times in a row listening to Walton.

Thank god NBC does not have the rights next year. I fucking hate Walton, Costas, and that brownoser Rashad.

As for the series i dont think the nets will win, even though i'm pulling for them. Lakers in 5.

One good thing that happened tonite, f'n charles barkley, kenny smith and ernie johnson stopped by at the half time show!!!! That made my night.

I saw the worst call I have ever seen in the history of basketball during game 6 of kings/lakers. They called Bibby for a foul and he was at least 2 feet away from Kobe. And last night, every call went the Lakers way. Nets have to attack the hoop. Shaq picked up his first foul in the fourth quarter. That can't happen. The refs definately favored the Lakers huge last night but the Nets should have made more free throws. Hope those calls will come back to Jersey.

The sad thing is I'm a Laker fan and I wanted to see the Kings win the championship .... if not only to see how the lakers and phil jackson would handle losing a series .....

Also, in game 2 against the Nets .... there were some of the worst calls I've ever seen .... I know I sound like a Laker hater but when the Nets were making that run to start the fourth there were 2 or 3 time in a row Shaq couldve easily been called for charging but he ended up with an easy lay-in or a dunk and that completely changed the momentum ..... I'm not saying it's fixed but I think the officials might be a little biased ....

I kind of wish Horry missed the 3 at the end of game 4 or whichever it was because you could possibly have seen the best matchup in the playoffs this year with the Kings vs. Nets

You are a dumb whore ....

Read the rest of the statement .... I do like the Lakers but I hate to see a team win on questionable terms no matter what team it is .... And listening to Kobe and Shaq whine over the last couple of years I was just simply stating I want to see how they handle coming in so heavily favored and lose .... I would like to see what they have to say .... Plus, I like Chris Webber and Jason Kidd and wouldn't mind seeing them win something ....

You certainly have enough to complain about against your own team, for a supposed lakers fan. You say Shaq and Kobe whine, and youd rather have the Kings in the Finals. Well, WHY BE A LAKERS FAN THEN?

Sorry, but FB is correct...you are an idiot. Further proving that point is how you said you wanted Horry to miss the 3. I did too, but i did because i hate the Lakers' guts. Guess i might as well be a lakers fan then, id fit under your criteria for a fan. YOU STINK!

There is nothing wrong with liking other teams. For example, my #1 football team is the New York Giants, but i also like the Miami Dolphins, a team that is unrelated to the Giants and their division.

Its different when you say youd rather see the Kings win against the team you supposedly like more, you stupid son of a bitch. You wanting the Kings to beat the Lakers would be like me wanting the Braves to beat the Mets. Get it now jackass?

Your a Lakers fan now, Im sure you were a big time Lakers fan back a few years ago when you had guys Like Sedalle Threat, Doug Christie, Vlade Divac, and even in the early days of Nick Van Exel.

Nah, you were a Bulls fan back then right? You didnt start liking the Lakers until 2000. Then again I dont really know who you truly like.

Why don't you just go back to having that dick in your mouth ....

I know everyone say oh I've liked this team forever because I can name everyone who was on the team back then .... who cares ....

First off I don't need your approval on who I like and yes I jumped on the bandwagon when I was about 9 yrs. old .... back in '86 you retard ....

You can look at all the teams I root for and all of them did have good years or won the championship that year .... The Red Sox, the Lakers, the Bears, and the Bruins .... all of them had exceptional years in that time frame but over the years I follow certain players as well .... like Chris Webber and Stojakovic from the SK .... I also like Jason Kidd from NJ .... It just happens that I keep my same favorite teams year after year and all of them are seeming to be coming around this year ....

I still have faith in the Red Sox after being let down numerous times ....

But, since the B-ball playoffs are here I do continue to root for the Lakers but I don't like how Shaq bitches all the time .... He can score 40 points and find something to bitch about .... he doesn't bitch when he lowers his shoulder and plows someone over and they get called for the foul .... of course, he wouldn't but he expects to get those kind of calls ....

Anyway, since you can't seem to understand that I can like a team but not some of the players then you should just shut your damn mouth .... I keep just simply stating I would like to see how they handle it and what they would say about the officiating ....

The curse shall be lifted ...... If there isn't a strike
