Who do you want to see your team draft? I don't
really feel like going through the list of who
will land where, I just care about a few teams.

I want the Sixers to get Missouri's Kareem Rush.
He's the second scorer the Sixers need to
compliment AI. Kareem has size too, I think he's
over 6'5". I think they'd put him at the 3.
I don't know if he'll make it to the 16 spot
though.

I've read the Knicks may take Dejuan Wagner with
the 7 pick. He's a real exciting player and a
legend in South Jersey. I think he really could
be a star in New York. It looks like they will
end up going for a big guy, like Wilcox. Not
nearly as exciting as Wagner.

Finally, Yao Ming; the next great center or
another Shawn Bradley? I think he'll be average
at best, and not at all worth a number one pick.

Do you really think he would be a good fit in Philly? I don't think that anyone at 6'5 would fit in well with Iverson. They need someone bigger than that. In addition, they could use a decent backup center too.

I'd like to see the Knicks take Wilcox.
Wagner might be better, but Genius Layden has already too many guards.

The Sixers need a second guy who can score. AI
needs someone who he can pass to. If Rush can
pull up and shoot a jumper, I say grab him if he's
there. They drafted a center last year, Dalmbert,
he didn't get many minutes but he can play a
little, at least on defence.

Chinese Pull Plug on Ming, Rockets
by The Rocket Guy
for HOOPSWORLD.com
Jun 24, 2002, 1:00pm

It has been a long time coming. The Chinese have a history of being extremely difficult to deal with - just ask Mark Cuban or Donnie Nelson. Both Mavs officials have been outspoken about the many issues they have faced in dealing with China in relations with Wang Zhizhi. It was Cuban who prophetically told the Rockets that dealings with the Chinese are never over or uncomplicated. His words rang true on Sunday night, when the Chinese told the NBA they would not allow Yao Ming to leave the country unless the league would sign a legal document guaranteeing that Ming would not miss any international tournaments, even if they interfere with the Rockets' schedule.

This is the final nail in Ming's NBA coffin. The Rockets made it clear that they would only draft Ming if they could get a guarantee that he would not miss any games. Surprisingly, the Chinese agreed to that stipulation. Now they are going back on their word, seeking a letter from the NBA that would negotiate the earlier letter. Wang Zhizhi missed 18 games for the Mavericks last season because he had to participate in a Chinese international tournament, which has apparently led to Zhizhi's decision to defect this summer. The Chinese are not willing to risk a Ming defection, so they are making it impossible for the Rockets to agree to draft him.

The big loser in this scenario is Yao Ming. The Rockets will be better off making a deal for the #1 pick, which will likely go to the Clippers so they can draft Duke's Jay Williams. Yao Ming was destined to be the biggest bust in draft history, given that the player who dominated him in China was little more than a role player in Dallas last season. China's little games just made it less appealing to deal with them in the Ming sweepstakes. The Rockets continued, undaunted, until the Chinese finally made the one request that would break the deal.

Yao Ming stands to lose millions, and the Chinese can forget about future relations with the NBA. The Rockets have made it clear that they will not take a player who cannot participate in 100% of their games. The NBA has taken the "hands off" stance, saying this is between the Rockets and China. China is appealing to the NBA, knowing they will do nothing. This way the Chinese can say it was a failure on the part of the NBA to offer certain guarantees that cost Yao Ming his NBA dream. The truth is known, though. The apparent defection of Wang Zhizhi killed this deal, just as we predicted it would. The Chinese got cold feet. The Rockets, meanwhile, have been saved from themselves. Ming is a bust. Let him stay in China.

Seems like everywhere I have read, the Knicks seem to be wanting to get Wilcox, which i guess would help them out. Honestly, there isnt much to write home about in this draft. If I were the Knicks, Id take a chance and draft that kid from UCLA, to provide much needed size, and some mobility in the middle.

Well, its official, the Rockets will pick Yao Ming as their #1 pick. Time will tell if this guy will be the next Manute Bol, or the next Kareem.

Yao gets clearance from China, will be picked No. 1 in NBA draft

By CHRIS SHERIDAN
AP Basketball Writer
June 26, 2002

NEW YORK (AP) -- Yao Ming received final clearance Wednesday from the Chinese Basketball Federation to play in the NBA, and the Houston Rockets announced that they would select the 7-foot-5 center with the No. 1 pick in the draft.

``I received a letter early this morning from Chinese Basketball Association chief executive Xin Lancheng confirming that all of his concerns have been addressed,'' Rockets attorney Michael Goldberg said. ``We are looking forward to drafting Yao with the first overall selection in the NBA draft.''

The announcement by the Rockets removed some of the uncertainty that had sprung up as the hours counted down toward Wednesday night's draft.

With all the other NBA teams now certain that Yao would go first, the focus switched to trade talk among teams looking to retool their rosters and move up in the first round.

The Cavaliers and Clippers were the teams involved in the most persistent trade rumor, with Cleveland considering sending NBA assists leader Andre Miller, along with the sixth overall pick, to Los Angeles for the eighth and 12th picks, along with a player.

Phoenix also was trying to trade up to move into Cleveland's spot, as was New York. The Clippers, Suns and Knicks all covet 19-year-old Brazilian forward ``Nene'' Hilario, whose stock has risen dramatically in the days leading up to the draft.

The Memphis Grizzlies, with the fourth pick, also were exploring a myriad of trade options, league executives said.

Yao already had reached agreement with his Chinese league team, the Shanghai Sharks, on a compensation package that would free him to jump to the NBA. But Yao also needed clearance from his national federation and could not receive a clearance letter from FIBA, the sport's international governing body, without the consent of the Chinese Basketball Association.

The CBA had concerns regarding whether Yao would be available to play with the Chinese national team in several international competitions.

The Chinese federation had a deadline of Friday to respond to the NBA's request, on behalf of the Rockets, for a letter of clearance, FIBA spokesman Florian Wanninger said.

Wanninger did not immediately return phone calls Wednesday.

Yao does not need the clearance letter to be drafted, but he would need it to play in the NBA next season.

``He's very excited. It's a major event in his career and his life,'' said Yao's agent, Erik Zhang. ``I think he's very happy right now. He will be able to compete with the best of the best and he wishes one day to help China win the Olympic medal in basketball.''

One trade was made Tuesday, with the Washington Wizards sending guard Courtney Alexander to the Hornets for the 17th pick. Washington now has two first-round selections, including its own at No. 11.

Junior college standout Qyntel Woods said he would welcome the opportunity to be drafted by the Wizards and play alongside Michael Jordan. The Los Angeles Lakers also have an interest in Woods and high school center Amare Stoudemire and were working diligently to improve their position.

The Lakers and Portland were said to be eager to improve their draft position and move into the top 10.

Perhaps the one executive who had everyone guessing the most was Grizzlies president Jerry West, who faces the daunting task of trying to turn one of the Western Conference's perennial doormats into a contender.

The pressure on West is amplified this summer because the team will not have a No. 1 pick next summer. The Grizzlies owe that pick to the Detroit Pistons from the long-ago acquisition of Otis Thorpe.

Memphis is in need of an upgrade at both center and point guard. West's best big-man choices are Hilario, Drew Gooden of Kansas, Nikoloz Tskitishvili of the former Soviet republic of Georgia and Chris Wilcox of Maryland.

West also could choose to draft the offensively gifted Dajuan Wagner, who played one year of college ball at Memphis under John Calipari.

Chicago selects second and is expected to take Duke guard Jay Williams. Golden state, picking third, should take Duke forward Mike Dunleavy.

After Memphis, Denver selects fifth, the Cavaliers sixth, New York seventh and the Los Angeles Clippers eighth. Next come Miami, Washington, the Clippers, Milwaukee, Indiana, Houston, Philadelphia, Washington, Orlando and Utah.

Toronto selects 20th, followed by Portland, Phoenix, Detroit, New Jersey, Denver, San Antonio, the Lakers and Sacramento.

Boston, Seattle, New Orleans, Atlanta and Minnesota do not have first-round picks.

I know you guys don't like hoopsworld but, here is an article worth reading:
quote:

KNICKS AND NUGGETS MAY HAVE A DEAL

Mavs' assistant Del Harris on FOX Sports radio 1190 in Dallas, just a few moments ago said that a trade is about to be completed between the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks.

Del indicated that the Knicks were sending Marcus Camby and the #7 pick to the Nuggets for Antonio McDyess and the #17 pick. Denver does not officially have the 17th pick although it is rumored to be going to Denver for James Posey. Washington, who obtained it from the New Orleans Hornets yesterday in exchange for Courtney Alexander.

This deal appears to have been completed during the last 24 hours before the draft when trades can not be announced, until the draft is underway.

This would give Denver the 5th, and 7th picks in the lottery to go with #25 and #33.

A point guard was mentioned as going to Denver also but no name was attached. Charlie Ward, Howard Eisley, or Mark Jackson would all work to balance out the salaries involved.

What he is is a Denver Nugget; TNT showed KiKi Vanderweghe announcing the trade to his teams fans at their draft party.

and unlike what ESPN is reporting, it seems the Knicks do not get the 25th pick.

Nuggets GM Kiki Vandeweghe has announced that the Nuggets traded Antonio McDyess to the New York Knicks for the Knicks seventh pick Maybyner "NeNe" Hilario, Mark Jackson and Marcus Camby.

Someone want to explain why Layden made this deal?

As I said, I knew what ESPN was reporting the 25th to Knicks, but Vanderweghe specifically did not mention it, nor was it on their web site (see the link above).

TNT however just said that the Knicks will get the pick (now Frank Williams of Illinois), so maybe he will be a Knick.

That might make it better, but it seems like the most important thing was getting rid of Jackson. I don't think McDyess is significantly better than Camby (not enough to justify including 7th pick), and it still makes the Knicks a bastard team. Are Knicks seriously thinking about playing Kurt Thomas with McDyess? will Witherspoon get ANY minutes?

so when's Miami playing New York next year?

Can't wait to See UConn's Caron Butler beat the shit out of the Knicks...god Layden is an idiot for passing up on him. BEST player in the entire draft, and i dont care what you say about Yao "Xiao Xiao Stick Man" Ming.

But the Knicks could only get McDyess for the 7th pick, Marcus Camby AND Mark Jackson? Jesus maybe they finally are really going into Rebuilding... which is the best things for the Knicks right now.

Yeah, well taking the shot is better than trying to win and losing first round of the playoffs. Hell, even if they don't think he's as good as they say they can always trade the pick.

It doesn't really make a difference if McDyess is better than Camby or not. He is now up there as one of the best big men in the East, and if he doesnt want to resign, then fuck him. Less salary to worry about for now. Great trade by Layden, its about time.
