Marty Captures 40th as Devils Roll Over The Caps

Bob K. 4-3-01

Martin Brodeur joined Jacques Plante & Terry Sawchuk in having three-forty win seasons, as the Devils defeated the Washington Capitals 6-4. The win also gave the Devils their 106th and 107th points of the season, tying the all time club mark. Patrik Elias also added a hat trick, as the Devils also won their second in a row.
The scoring started off just 4:25 into the game as Patrik Elias held up the puck at the left wing circle, and as a pass attempt was heading cross-ice the puck banked in off Capital Defenseman Joe Reekie. Ten minutes later, fresh after a nights rest Captain Scott Stevens found Bobby Holik in the slot who wrested his 15th of the season. But just a minute and a half later 16:07, Sergei Gonchar received a quick pass off the draw from Halpern and slapped a quick one by Brodeur. Heading into the locker room after the first, the shots were the Devils with nine, and the Caps with six.
At 6:28, Washington tied the score at two when Trevor Linden through the puck in front which trickled over line after hitting Martin Brodeur’s stick and then off his skate. Minutes later, Ken Sutton and Colin White were both called for penalties at eight minutes. The Devils held off the five-on-three attack for over a minute, but Adam Oates cross-ice pass to Andrei Nikolishin ended up in the top shelf of the net, and the Caps took a 3-2 lead. Ten minutes later, Bobby Corkum scored his second goal as a Devil as his wrister from the point beat Olaf Kolzig. That goal tied the score at three. Twenty-two seconds later, Petr Sykora’s quick shot beat Kolzig but laid on the goal line until Patrik Elias scored his second of the night at 19:42. The shots on goal in the second period were the Devils with eighteen and the Caps with nine.
The Devils finally took the lead for good when Petr Sykora connected with Patrik Elias, who completed the hat trick, on a two-one-none shorthanded goal. Minutes later Scotty Gomez found Alex Mogilny in the slot who banged in his 43rd of the season at 9:50. The Caps did add a late goal by Steve Konowalchuk, but the Devils held on to win by a score of 6-4.

Looks like Ottawa is choking away the #1 seed.
They lose in Atlanta tonight.

I dont mind the Devils being the #1 seed. They play their "Best" hockey in that position.

that old gag

really i dont dispute much, but your basing that on a team that was under the defense happy jacques lemaire('cept for dvorak *shudder*), that of which in both losses under lemair they preduced like 7 points in all of those games, im thinkin theyre gonna do more than that w/ the team they have this year, so im not worried about the dreaded 1 seed thing anymore.

they also won a Cup Under Lemaire. So he had to of done something right over his career.

And it would be a crime if Brodeur didnt win his first Vezina I believe, this year.
