EASTERN CONFERENCE

#1 PHILADELPHIA vs. #8 INDIANA
This is not your typical #1 vs. #8. Much like in 1999, with the Knicks, the Pacers are not a typical #8 seed. They underachieved this season and have talent and experience and nothing to lose. On the other hand, The Sixers got Mutombo and they are not only expected to win this series, but to get to the Finals. There is going to be alot of precious on Philadelphia in this series. I think Indiana will give Philadelphia a serious test here, and remember Indiana has eliminated Philadelphia from the playoffs the previous two years. I think Indiana will take a game in Philly, and Philly will return the favor in Philadelphia. Im predicting Philadelphia to win a hard fought 5th game back at home and survive in this series, but Indiana has a real serious shot.
PREDICTION: 76ers in 5

#2 MILWAUKEE VS. #7 ORLANDO
This is the weakest 1st Round Playoff Matchup. Orlando really played terrible down the stretch, while Milwaukee is a team coming into its first year of prosperity. I think Milwaukee is vulnerable for the upset, but got a huge break in playing a team like Orlando, instead of a team like Indiana. Its funny how it works, but the #2 seed for Milwaukee is alot friendlier than the #1 seed for Philadelphia. But I do believe the Bucks will pull this one out.
PREDICTION: Bucks in 4

#3 MIAMI VS. #6 CHARLOTTE
These two teams are familiar with each other as Jamal Mashburn and PJ Brown will face their former teams, as will Anthony Mason and Eddie Jones, if he is healthy. Miami was sparked by Alonzo Mourning's return and that enabled them to obtain the #3 seed. Charlotte is another team that faltered down the stretch. Tim Hardaway's health is a concern for the Heat, but they overmatch Charlotte too much in this series.
PREDICTION: Heat in 4

#4 NEW YORK vs. #5 TORONTO
The Knicks didnt do their Playoff hopes any favors by dropping down to the 4th seed and battling the Raptors. The Raptors have played the Knicks well in the Regular Season the past 2 years, but the Playoffs is when the Knicks actually start to play Basketball. The Raptors have that year of playoff experience under their belt, which will help, but if the Knicks beat Toronto with Carter and McGrady last year, they should be able to beat them again this year without McGrady. Keep in mind the idiotic playoff scheduling will help the Knicks because they are older and Camby will have more time to heal. The Knicks have won 9 consecutive First Round Series', this one should be 10. But it might go the distance, with each team taking a game on the other's home court.
PREDICTION: Knicks in 5

WESTERN CONFERENCE

#1 SAN ANTONIO VS. #8 MINNESOTA
Poor Minnesota. Every year they seem to get better, but never can get out of the First Round. That will likely not change this year. Minnesota put up a decent record, but with the powerhouse Western Conference it was only good enough for 8th place. San Antonio ran away with the West Title the 2nd half of the season and are playing real well. Minnesota will give San Antonio a fight but will come up short, but I think Minnesota will take this the distance. Each team will win a game on the other's home court.
PREDICTION: Spurs in 5

#2 LA LAKERS VS. #7 PORTLAND
Well who would have thought this. Last year's Western Conference Finals is repeated here in the First Round. Portland had a disastrous 2nd half of the season and fell from #1 all the way down to #7. Matching up with the Defending Champions, is just an insult to injury for the Blazers. The Blazers played the Lakers tough last year and should have beaten them, if not for blowing a 14 point 4th Quarter lead in Game 7 last year. The Blazers have proven that they are capable of winning in the Staples Center, and who knows what Portland will show up? I think they will get their act together, but it will be too late, but this series should go the distance.
PREDICTION: Lakers in 5

#3 SACRAMENTO VS. #6 PHOENIX
Late Season struggles cost Sacramento the Pacific Division Title. A Late Season surge and a Portland collapse enabled Phoenix to grab the #6 seed. Sacramento is an exciting team but doesnt play enough Defense to suceed in the Playoffs, but Phoenix is a similar team, and Anfernee Hardaway is out for the playoffs. Sacramento should survive here, as it will be very difficult for Phoenix to win in Sacramento.
PREDICTION: Kings in 4

#4 UTAH VS. #5 DALLAS
Dallas will make their First Playoff appearance in a decade, and their opponents are the heavily based veteran team of Utah. Anytime you have a matchup like that and the Veteran Team has the homecourt, you have to favor them. Dallas has been an exciting team and may push this series to the limit, but the Jazz's experience should be enough for them to prevail.
PREDICTION: Jazz in 5

This should be a very competitive First Round, with alot of series' having a chance to go the limit.

Teen and I were 5-3 in the First Round,
Rone was 6-2. i guess that makes him the best.

on to the 2nd Round of the playoffs starting tomorrow.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

#1 PHILADELPHIA vs. #5 TORONTO
The 76ers got a major scare in Game 1 against Indiana, but showed alot of poise and resilience by taking the next 3 games from a talented and experienced Indiana squad. Toronto is coming off their stunning 1st Round series win over the Knicks. What will Toronto have left for Philadelphia? Probably not much. After such an emotional series and win on Friday, I cant see Toronto getting off to a good start in this series. Sunday's Game 1 may be a huge blowout. Toronto may get into this series eventually, but it might be too late. Look for Philadelphia to roll.
PREDICTION: 76ers in 5

#2 MILWAUKEE vs. #6 CHARLOTTE
Here are two teams that nobody thought would be playing in a Conference Semi-Final against one another. Charlotte has had a very long lay off after their shocking massacre over The Heat. Milwaukee played a fine series and got past the Magic. The long lay off, and the fact that Milwaukee will not take Charlotte lightly, is not a good sign for the Hornets. Charlotte may be able to take a couple of games here, but I dont expect anything more than that. Milwaukee is too talented for Charlotte and are destined to make a name for themselves for many years to come. Similar to the way Indiana was in 1994.
PREDICTION: Bucks in 6

WESTERN CONFERENCE

#1 SAN ANTONIO vs. #5 DALLAS
San Antonio got by a pretty tough team in Minnesota. Dallas is coming off a very emotional and great series win over Utah. As is the case with Toronto, Dallas probably gave everything they could in their 1st Round series and will have very little left going up against the Top team in the NBA. Dallas may make things interesting, and with the youth on the team, they may still be juvenated, but they just cant match up with the twin towers in San Antonio.
PREDICTION: Spurs in 5

#2 LA LAKERS vs. #3 SACRAMENTO
This is definetly the best series of the First Round and its going to be a very good one. The King and Lakers have formed a good rivalry the past couple of years and the teams do not like one another. Alot of people will be rooting for Sacramento to knock off the big bad Lakers and they have a chance. Both teams are dominant at home, but both teams have won on the others home court in the regular season. Last year in their 1st Round series, the home team won every game. This year its a Best of 7 series and its going to be a war, but the Home court, and the Kobe and Shaq factor will enable the Lakers to just barely squeak out of this one, which could be a very memorable series.
PREDICTION: Lakers in 7

As usual, the first round was very interesting. By this time most of us would have had Miami playing the Bucks and I seriously doubt many expected Dallas to overcome the experience of Utah. Of course, much like the NCAA, we often see teams play above their perceived skill level early on, but as the playoffs go on and pressure builds, these teams usually come crashing back to Earth. That being said.....

Philly vs. Toronto
I see Toronto pretty much in the same boat the Sixers were in the last two years, still developing, full of talent, but not quite ready to take the next step. The same downsides they faced against the Knicks await them here, namely a lack of a true center, and a marginal point guard. They did not really overcome these flaws in the first round, rather the Knicks inability to score on a consistent basis determined the outcome. They can not expect to keep getting by on thier "good looks". Philly was riddled with injuries all season and still managed to post the second best record in the league and the drawn out first round has given them time to heal a bit. Philly in 5

Milwaukee vs. Charlotte
Almost as shocking as Philadelphia's improvement this year was the consistently superb play of the Bucks. Charlotte had very little business making it out of the first round, although they played thier asses off, much like Francine B, I do believe they have shot their load. They may be able to pull a pair out and make things interesting, but the series will never be in question. Bucks in 6

San Antonio vs. Dallas
All signs point to the Spurs walking away with this series. They were the best team in the regular season, they have won a championship, and very few teams can deal with thier inside game. Dallas won their first round off of shear will and energy. We will see the twin towers go up against two of the most awkward, lanky white boys the world has ever seen.... how Nowitzke plays so well is beyond me, every time I watch him play I am convinced that he was tooled on relentlessly as a child, yet he is an outstanding player. Bradley may have been able to stave off a considerably shorter Malone, but the size and athleticism of Duncan and Robinson will prove too much for the young Mavericks. San Antonio in 5, but keep your eye on this one.... emotion can be a funny thing

Lakers vs. Kings
Perhaps the two most talented, well rounded teams in the league with very similar styles of play. This is by far the toughest series to predict. Bottom line here will be desire.... who wants it more? While I have to give LA a slight edge talent wise, the run and gun style of the Kings may prove too much for Shaq. While he gets up and down the court remarkably well for a man of his size, can he keep that pace up for 7 games? He was able to do it last year, but the Kings are a more mature team now than they were a year ago. I will go out on a limb and say Kings in 7

Conference Finals

Right now I have to give Philly the edge over the Bucks, mainly on experience and coaching, could go either way, but I have to go with my sentimental favorite and say Sixers in 6

In the west, I am going to have to go with the fast paced Kings wearing down the big men of the Spurs.... Sacramento in 6

Its Conference Final Time and here we go with that.

2001 NBA EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS
PHILADELPHIA 76ERS vs. MILWAUKEE BUCKS
Both teams are coming off tough 7 game Series' in the previous round and this is certainly a New Battle in the Eastern Conference Finals. Its been a very long time since either team has made it this far, and one of these teams will be playing in the NBA Finals, otherwise known as "The Right to get Slaughtered by the West Champion Series". I was originally going with Milwaukee here, but Im going to have a change of heart on that. I wasnt very impressed with Milwaukee against Charlotte. If Milwaukee was a Championship caliber team, they should have had a far easier time with an inferior Hornets team than they did. The 76ers got all they can handle and survived Toronto, I expect them to have that same test again from Milwaukee. Having the Home court in a Game 7 is going to be key for Philadelphia, and if Philly slips in one of their Home games, they are the best Road Team in the NBA, and are more than capable of winning a game in Milwaukee. I think the the teams will split the first 2 in Philly, split the next 2 in Milwaukee, and then Home court will play out, and the 76ers will win a Hard fought series to become Eastern Conference Champions
PREDICTION: 76ers in 7

2001 WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS
SAN ANTONIO SPURS VS. LOS ANGELES LAKERS
This series is already one game in the books, and is there any stopping the Lakers? The Lakers pretty much handled the Spurs in Game 1, and there may be no stopping the Lakers at all in these playoffs. Game 2 is huge for the Spurs, there season is on the line. If the Spurs fall in Game 2, this Series may be a very short one, to the surprise of alot of people. I think the Spurs will give a much better effort in Game 2 and pull it out, but winning this series right now, doesn't look likely the way the Lakers are playing right now. When Kobe Bryant and Shaq are playing the way they are, maybe not even Jordan's Bulls can stop them. The Spurs will give a better fight in this series than they did in Game 1, but will fall short.
PREDICTION: Lakers in 6

Rest of the Playoffs

2001 NBA FINALS
I havent been able to find out who will have Home Court Advantage yet. They both finished with the same Record at 56-26 and they split the Season Series 1-1. My guess would be Philly will have it, but who knows.

If Philadelphia has Home Court
Prediction: Lakers in 6

If Lakers have Home Court
Prediction: Lakers in 5

Well, although the game totals didn't work out quite as I expected, I did ok in the second round..... that is if you don't include that debacle of a series Sacremento put on.

As for home court in the finals, if it comes down to L.A. and Philly, it works out like this:
Identical regular season records, teams split vs. each other, L.A. had a better record vs. the Eastern Conference than Philly had vs. the West, so L.A. gets home court.

The way the Lakers are playing, it really is no contest even though the Sixers played very well against them, without George Lynch, and with Snow hobbled and Iverson banged up, Philly simply is not deep enough to compete. As much as it pains me to say, Lakers win handily. I do however believe that the Sixers have as much team unity and heart as this league has seen in a very long time, and can use that to pull a game maybe two, but not much more.

I think Philly will best the Bucks in a long tight battle in what has essentially become the right to get spanked by the Lakers series.

Well, I have probably said it a thousand times already, but I will say it again.

It looks pretty bad for my beloved Sixers. L.A. is currently playing as well as any team has played in some twenty years. On Philly just doesn't match up, especially with the injury problems they have. The only category that they truly have L.A. beaten in is heart, and that you can not measure. Every so often, sports miracles take place, and a team that nobody believes in pulls an incredible upset..........

Sadly, I do not think this will be one of those years. I think the Lakers will win the series, but I do not expect the complete blowout so many have predicted. I honestly think the Sixers will pull at least one game, maybe two, simply by shear determination. Should the rust factor in for the Lakers in game 1 and Philly can steal one, the whole picture will change a bit. Philly will start to believe in themselves, and the Lakers will come back down to Earth a bit. If that is the case, the series may actually go 6 or 7 games, but I still think L.A. will win in the end.

All this of course does not change the fact that I will be rooting my ass off for the Sixers.

On a side note, George Lynch was scheduled to practice with the team today, I have not yet heard how things went, but if he plays and is anywhere near 100% (which is highly unlikely) the Sixers defense will be that much tougher, and their bench will be a little deeper.

Still one spot open!

Well i got the 76ers-Bucks series right on the money with my split the first 2, split the next 2, and home court plays out prediction, its good to be right once in awhile, on to the Finals.

2001 NBA FINALS
LOS ANGELES LAKERS VS. PHILADELPHIA 76ERS
Unfortunately this is the 3rd straight year, where the NBA Finals features a Huge Favorite and a Heavy Undergog. That was the case last year with the Lakers over the Pacers, and in 1999 with the Spurs over the Knicks. This year its even more of a mismatch. The reason why is the Lakers are playing unconcious Basketball. They have yet to lose in the playoffs, and you have to go all the way back to over 2 months ago, against the Knicks of all teams, to find The Lakers last defeat. Not only are they winning, they are pummeling teams. The Spurs were the best team in the NBA this team, and they got absolutely spanked by the Lakers, by a combined 70 points in the games in LA. The Sixers are coming off two emotional 7 games series wins over Toronto and Milwaukee. Advantages for Philadelphia in this series: They are playing with complete House Money, They have no pressure on them at all, as nobody even expects them to win a game in this series. Another advantage is that the Lakers havent played in 10 days, and all that momentum they had, may be subdued now. Plus throw in the fact that Lakers may not be as hungry as the Sixers, as they have to know that the NBA Title is just about theirs. What hurts the Sixers, is the idiotic 2-3-2 Format in the Finals. Its a Major Disadvantage for the team without Home Advantage. If your going to win the series at home, you will have to do it in 5 games, and no team has ever won the Middle 3 games at home in a row. This format cost the Knicks a championship in 94. So because of this format, the Sixers have no chance to win this series. Because even if by some miracle, the Sixers can have a 3-2 lead going back to LA. LA Will not lose the last 2 games at home, with their season on the line, and now forced to play basketball. I think the Sixers will make one of the first 2 games competitve in LA, but will lose both of them. I do however think the Sixers will take a game in this series and spoil LA's streak, but thats as far as it gets. I would be VERY SURPRISED if this series goes back to Los Angeles.
PREDICTION: Lakers in 5
