TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Dwight Gooden, one of the candidates for the Yankees' fifth starter spot, will start New York's spring training opener Thursday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

``He's a pitcher that we're going to look at, not necessarily as a starter,'' Yankees manager Joe Torre said. ``We just picked him to start. It's not anything other than getting a look like we're going to have to get with everybody else.''

Roger Clemens, the frontrunner to start the regular season opener April 2, will pitch the spring home opener Friday against the Blue Jays.

Andy Pettitte is to make his spring debut Saturday, followed by Orlando Hernandez on Sunday and Mike Mussina on Monday.

Torre said Gooden will not start next Tuesday's game. He said Adrian ``El Duquecito'' Hernandez or Randy Keisler -- other candidates for the No. 5 spot -- might get the call.

``Both of them will pitch an inning over the weekend and then be ready to pitch Tuesday,'' Torre said. ``We're just going to try a lot of different things.''

Hernandez worked two perfect innings against the Yankees' regulars in an intrasquad game Monday. Keisler allowed one run -- a homer by Wily Pena -- and two hits over two innings against a lineup comprised by minor leaguers.

Sid Fernandez sailed through his first batting practice session Monday. The left-hander, who hasn't pitched in the majors since 1997, was invited to camp last Tuesday after a bullpen session.

``Sid did a nice job,'' Torre said. ``His curveball was impressive.''

Fernandez will likely throw BP again Wednesday, and could make his first game appearance soon after that.

``I'm happy to get it behind me,'' said Fernandez, after his 10-minute session. ``The first couple pitches were kind of awkward, but after a while I just settled in and it was fine.''

Scott Kamieniecki (back) reported no problems after playing catch for the second straight day. Allen Watson (shoulder) threw for the first time and wasencouraged.

Congrats to the man, I know he's had it rough, but nothing but good luck to the Doc.

You can never have too many arms in the bullpen. And Doc did pretty well out of the bullpen last year.

Jesus Christ if they start Sid fernandez in any regular season game, I think we're looking at Cone results of last year...Sid should just pack it up and head back to Hawaii...

Unless Joe makes him a specialist ala Graehme Llyod, He'll be back in Hawaii smokin' Puna Butter real soon. His fastball was clocked in the high 70's
