There is no way this is happening.

JETS MIGHT FLY IF CITY WON'T PLAY BALL(PARK)

By NEAL TRAVIS

May 2, 2001 -- JETS owner Woody Johnson has given at least a cursory thought to moving his team to Los Angeles, sources close to the billionaire say.
Johnson is looking to California while he talks with City Hall about financial help in building a new West Side stadium that would bring the team back to New York from New Jersey, where they share a ballpark with the Giants.

"Woody loves the team," one of his social chums tells me.

"He's a first-class kind of guy. He doesn't think it's right that they should be second-class tenants in Giants Stadium. If New York City won't help him build a great new showplace for the Jets, maybe the L.A. option becomes more attractive."

Sources with the club insisted, even off the record, that the Jets would be staying in the New York area one way or another.

But it's understandable that this story would be denied. The threat to move is the trump card teams play in the financial poker game ball clubs, cities and states engage in.

Remember, the stakes in Woody's game are approaching $1 billion. A similar game is taking place across the Hudson, where the New Jersey Nets are threatening to head South if the state doesn't come through with lots of cash for a new arena in Newark.

City Hall sources suggest that sporting Mayor Rudy believes the Jets could up and leave town if they don't get help with a new stadium.

"That's one of the reasons he's making his last-ditch effort to get them established on the West Side of Manhattan," says one observer. "He knows, and Woody knows, that none of his likely successors has any interest in spending public money on football and baseball stadiums."

The situation may become a bit more clear after the $1 billion lawsuit that Raiders owner Al Davis brought against the NFL is settled. Davis, who moved his club back to Oakland from L.A. in 1995, claims he still owns the franchise for Los Angeles.

Several other clubs, including the Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints, are in the mix of those interested in moving to the nation's second-biggest TV market. But should the Jets go to California, as baseball's Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants did ages ago, we could witness one of the greatest ironies in sports history.

I understand the most favored site for a new arena is over one of the vast parking lots at Dodger Stadium. (The Dodgers are owned by News Corp., The Post's parent company.)

If this happens, another treasured New York team could be playing in the house that the late and loathed (in Brooklyn, at least) Walter O'Malley built.

O.K. Woody, let's move the team to the only city (number two "two" market) that can't support an N.F.L. team. Why would he leave New York where there is a waiting list for season tickets? This is just leverage (and not very good) for a new stadium. Woody, you are a rich mother fucker, just spend the money and move the team back to Queens where we belong.

I shucked it, and I shucked it, and I shucked it, i'm quite the mother shucker!

They don't belong in Queens. They should move to Manhattan or Long Island where their largest fanbase is.

Ro,how is it the Post's fault, they are saying that Woody is thinking about it. He is on crack. You can bust on the Post, but when it comes to breaking Sports stories, there is no one better than them.

I don't put a lot of stock in a story that you can't even get any real quotes for. They have two "sources" and both are unidentified. It's funny how anybody can write an article about anything without any proof or merit. Actually it's just really sad.

These are his friends starting rumors to get the "new stadium" ball rolling...don't you think they're the kind of people that would be great to use as real chum in shark infested waters?

Jets to LA? Let's see...leave the largest market in the world, huge loyal fanbase and all that history? I don't think so. Woody's just got a woody for a new stadium.

if woody gets desperate enough, hell get the NJSEA to build them a a stadium next to the Giants. It has been kicked around before. The only snag could be that the Giants want a new stadium built now as well. Not in the immediate future, but soon.

Tony the Jets play about as well as you post... you may want to look into adoption... I would love to see that disgrace of a franchise leave Giants stadium once and for all. The farther away they go the better!!!

The most pathetic franchise of the last 30 Years? I wont question that they have been very pathethic at times, but there are alot of Franchises in Sports who would take that honor over the Jets. An NBA team that plays across the street is alot worse. Everybody knows the Clippers are the Worst Franchise in Sports History.

Tampa Bay, Seattle, New England, Cincinnati, San Diego, Arizona, Philadelphia, Detroit, New Orleans, Atlanta.

Tell me how those teams have better histories than the Jets?

The Jets have a Superbowl title, changed the evolution of Football forever and essentially created the NFL merger. The greatest win in Football history. Yet they are the most pathethic in history? I dont get it. I dont get why you have so much hatred for the Jets. The Jets and Giants dont have a rivalry like Rangers-Islanders, Mets-Yankees etc.

As a Jet fan I dont hate the Giants. I root against the Islanders all the time. I root against the Yankees all the time. The Giants, I root for whatever team I have money on.

Let's think about this folks
Do we really need 2 football stadiums in this area? Just for 16 games a year? I really don't see a problem with the current operations at Giants Stadium........We have football there, concerts there, soccer there, etc....
I really think it would be an absolute waste of $$ to build a stadium for them. Even though I am a NYG fan, I do not want the NYJ to leave town, but I really don't think a new football stadium is necessary.

If towns like Pittsburgh and Cincinnati can build new stadiums every 3 minutes for all of their teams. Why cant New York get any stadiums?

Think about, Name Just About ANY City in the 4 major sports, and probably 95% of them have had new Stadiums or Arenas built in the last 5-10 years, except for one City. Try and guess which one. With the exception of Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium, all the facilities should be replaced.

Its definately necessary, either a new stadium or at least change the name of Giants Stadium. It doesn't feel good to go to every home game in what dick Giants fans call "their home." And I'm sure it sucks for the players to pretty much play all 16 games away. It will also bring in a lot more money than it will take to build. Imagine all the uses you could get out of it all throughout the year, and with a retractable roof which they'll probably put it, it would make rediculous amounts of money. I am definately for this and I think it will be a great decision to build a new stadium in the city.

If NYC decides to build a new football stadium on the west side, then NYC should also stage a CART race through the city. :)
