ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The St. Louis Blues are bracing for another long absence by the NHL's most valuable player.

Defenseman Chris Pronger broke his left forearm when he was struck by a clearing pass in the first period of the Blues' 7-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Monday night.

The injury, which will sideline the team captain for the rest of the regular season, came in his second game back after missing 15 games following arthroscopic knee surgery.

St. Louis led 1-0 when Pronger was injured at 9:34 of the first period.

The Blues went on to match their season-best goal total, but despite regaining first place in the Central Division by a point over idle Detroit, they were a pedestrian 6-6-3 the last time Pronger left the lineup.

``We've already had a rehearsal on that, and it was a tough stretch,'' Quenneville said. ``He was just so comfortable the last game, and here he goes again. It's a tough blow.''

Pronger joins the Blues' other All-Star defenseman, Al MacInnis, on the sideline. MacInnis missed his 14th game with an eye injury, although he was cleared to begin activity and light skating on his own.

Pronger was hurt at the end of a shift when he tried to glove a clearing pass from teammate Alexander Khavanov. He immediately headed for the locker room.

``You get that feeling in the pit of your stomach right when you see it,'' trainer Ray Barile said. ``You could just tell right away that something was wrong.''

Surgery was scheduled for Tuesday, and a metal plate was to be placed in the forearm to speed the healing process. The Blues believe Pronger, who had a goal and two assists in his first game back on Saturday, can return for the playoffs.

``You're demoralized, but what are you going to do?'' general manager Larry Pleau said. ``We'll deal with it the best way we can.''

Marty Reasoner had two goals to double his season total, getting one on a penalty shot in the first period, and Jochen Hecht also scored twice. The Blues were outscored 18-9 the previous five games, four of them losses.

It was the worst beating of the season absorbed by the Sharks, who lead the NHL in fewest goals allowed, and the most goals allowed in Darryl Sutter's four seasons as coach.

``The only thing we can possibly take out of this game is that it's so embarrassing,'' defenseman Gary Suter said. ``Good teams, if they get beat like that, really come out of the gate the next game.''

The Blues scored on a penalty shot for only the 11th time in franchise history after Scott Hannan pulled down Reasoner at 6:39 of the first period. Reasoner, who entered with one goal in 21 games and numerous trips to Worcester of the AHL, faked twice before beating Evgeni Nabokov.

``I was telling guys afterwards that down in Worcester I was 0-for-6 on breakaways,'' said Reasoner, who also scored on a breakaway in the third period. ``I guess it's better off that you can go as slow as you want when you're out there on the penalty shot.''

It was the Blues' first successful penalty shot since Geoff Courtnall beat Detroit's Chris Osgood on Oct. 29, 1998. All 11 of the successful penalty shots have come at home.

Nabokov, a rookie who led the NHL in goals-against average, allowed onlyfour goals in his previous four starts.

MVP?????

I guess Pronger was a legit choice even with his recent injuries. I'll have to throw Sakic and Kovalev into the barrell.

Word has it now that Pronger may be back for the Playoffs. That could be a boos for them because with him they are a legit Stanley Cup Contender, without him they are not.

If this injury would of happened a week earlier, they probably would of made a good offer for Blake to replace him instead of him going to the true favorite in the NHL, the Colorado Avalanche.
