RANGERS NOTEBOOK
Mottau Anxious to Make Debut

Cecil Harris

Representatives from nine NHL teams that scouted the Rangers' 3-2 loss to Ottawa last night nearly got a chance to see prospect Mike Mottau play his first NHL game.

The Rangers brought up Mottau, an offensive-minded defenseman, from Hartford (AHL) and gave him uniform No. 33 for the pregame skate just in case the team had trouble dressing six backliners. But Mottau's debut was delayed because Kim Johnsson shook off a left knee injury and coach Ron Low used veteran Alexei Gusarov, a healthy scratch on Sunday in Philadelphia.

When Mottau, 22, gets his chance, general manager Glen Sather seems determined to make sure it comes as a Ranger. So far, Sather has regarded Mottau and forwards Pavel Brendl and Jamie Lundmark as virtually untouchable when other general managers have proposed trades.

Mottau, last year's Hobey Baker Award winner as college hockey's player of the year with Boston College, has nine goals and 29 assists and a plus-12 rating in 55 games at Hartford.

"Playing in Hartford has been a great experience for me, but hopefully I can get a shot [in the NHL] at the end of this [season]," Mottau said.

Now thats a nice story isnt it. This Tool must not be much of a Ranger fan because if he is. He would know that Mottau has already played this year for the Rangers. He played in 8 games for them earlier in the year, so so much for his NHL Debut.
