New arena could be ready by 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

TRENTON, N.J. -- The New Jersey Devils and Nets will play home games in a $355 million arena in downtown Newark, a deal team owners and state officials say won't cost taxpayers.

Construction will start soon, and the teams could be playing games there by 2004, said a representative of YankeeNets, the sports conglomerate that owns both teams.

The Continental Airlines Arena will be torn down in three years and the state will look to attract a "family entertainment" facility to the Meadowlands, the sprawling sports complex off the New Jersey Turnpike, acting Gov. Donald T. DiFrancesco said.

The deal for the two indoor sports teams could also mean a new football stadium at the Meadowlands, DiFrancesco said.

The acting governor announced the plan Wednesday afternoon, praising the package he says will not burden state taxpayers.

New Jersey would own the new arena, but YankeeNets would pay to build it, DiFrancesco said.

"The arena would be self-financing. The general taxpayers of New Jersey will have no obligation," DiFrancesco said.

YankeeNets will pay $115 million of the plan. The remaining $240 million will be paid from tax revenues generated by the new arena from sales of luxury boxes, tickets and merchandise and from sales in the surrounding area, which will be designated as a "sports/entertainment district."

The state will double the sales tax in that district around the arena. The area now pays 3 percent sales tax, a reduced rate to spur economic growth.

The Newark arena would house the NHL's New Jersey Devils, who could win the Stanley Cup on Thursday, and the NBA's New Jersey Nets.

Both teams now play home games at Continental Airlines Arena in the Meadowlands sports complex just off the New Jersey Turnpike in East Rutherford, Bergen County.

The NFL's Jets and Giants play in Giants Stadium, also part of the sports center.

DiFrancesco has said he is committed to keeping both football teams in the Meadowlands while exploring the possibility of a Newark arena.

YankeeNets, the sports conglomerate that owns the Devils and the Nets, wants out of East Rutherford. A spokeswoman for the company did not immediately return a telephone message on Wednesday.

DiFrancesco said recently a redevelopment plan for Camden and a Newark arena project were top priorities for his administration.

The Camden proposal was announced last month.

I'm not sure what to think of this.
I mean, yeah, it's a little closer to me, but it's F-ing Newark.
Couldn't they find a place where the chances of my car getting stolen are a bit lower?

A few points against JewDown's Argument>>

1. The section of Newark proposed is getting nicer and will be only spectacular with that new building, inciting crime to drop around the arena.

2. I am guessing you would park in a garage with maximum security, ensuring your cars still being there.

3. If it is easier for you, take a train to the game right into Penn Station, the arena will be just blocks from there.

I dont like this at all. The Meadowlands is 10 minutes down the road from home. It couldn't be much more convenient for me. God damn it.

SpiderBob, thanks for pointing out the obvious. It was "a little joke". Yeah, it was a bad one, but a joke none-the-less.
Actually I'm glad to see that the state is trying to improve that dilapidated city. It's about damn time.

I, personally, think it caters to the core of fans of Essex County and the team itself. I live just about equidistant to both places, but Newark has idenity, it gives them a city, not just some swamp (which I will always call hockey's home. +, it is a new rink, which I am so happy about. I hate the current building.

Personaly i like the old arena. i actually wish they would have neve rchanged its name. I mean when i was little and i heard "Welcome to Brendan Burn(i dunno how to spell hi last name) Arena, home of the New Jersey Devils" i thougth it was so effin cool. But i gues it will be easier to get to the games now. for me anyway, anyone that takes me always has a hard time goin to the meadowlands, but never has a tough time gettin to Newark. i dont get it. Oh well.

MY 1000th post - sorry had to say it.

Anyway, I love the CAA. But times are a changing, and the rink is outdated. I have been to a lot of the new rinks, Air Canada Center, MCI Center, First Union Center, and the Pepsi Center last week. They blow the Meadowlands out of the water. So, I just think it is awesome they get a new place to call home.

CAA - Not a bad seat in the house. I love the place, and i will be sad to see it go. Been going there since i was a wee lil tot, ans i have so many memories of Brendan Byrne/Continental Airlines/Meadowlands Arena. Is it just me, or did everyone just call the place Meadowlands Arena?

Anyways, correcvt me if i'm wrong, but are they going to build this arena on top of Newark Penn Station? Think about it, a direct connection from MSG to the NJD's new home. that would be cool.

its not true anymore but god forbid them letting facts get in the way

Does this mean that if we win the cup again we'll get a parade down beautiful Broad St instead of in a parking lot?

Well, I can say from experience that I am not sad to see the CAA go. After working there for 3 years, I can say the place SUCKED! I hated going to work during rush hour traffic, and hated having to wait to get out of there after a game!

For those of you that may ask, I was one of those "Yellow Jackets" security guards back in the late 80's, early 90's.

Newark is the right place for the teams, and I wish them all the best! I will certainly attend more games once they are playing in Newark.

Thank you Guvnor!

I was hope'n that they would make a smaller Arena in the Medowlands and have a minor league hockey team move in so people can go to games and afford to see hockey. ( in hartford, AHL, you can sit on the glass for $22.00 -- can't beat that)

According to an article in the Post just a few months ago, Larry Brooks stated that the Ranger Paid Attendance was 17,493 on average. Their real attendance was somewhere in the 14,000s.

I said sold out. As in no more tickets left. Not how many people are at the game. Sorry if you were confused

I dont give a shit if 2 people are in the seats.
They are sold out.

If the Devils were as bad as the Rangers, the Meadowlands would look like it does for Nets games, with the entire Top section empty.

Everytime you try to compare Devils attendance to the Rangers is the equivalent of saying the Rangers are a better team than the Devils.
