BROOKLYN, Mich. -- You can gauge Jeff Gordon's success rate by the boos -- the more you hear, the better he's doing. And after Sunday's Kmart 400 at Michigan International Speedway, Gordon was fairly bathed in them.

For the second consecutive week, Gordon was far and away the class of the 43-car field, making a mockery of things and leading 143 of 200 laps en route to his 55th career win and the 100th of team owner Rick Hendrick's career. Hendrick, whose father, Joe, is undergoing heart surgery Monday, was not there to witness the win.

Hendrick joins Petty Enterprises (271) and Junior Johnson (139) as the only team owners to have at least 100 wins. As a result of his ninth top-5 finish of the season and his third win, Gordon is now leading Dale Jarrett, who finished 18th, by 26 points in the race for the Winston Cup championship.

About the only thing that has taken away from this win right now is that we couldn't have Rick here and Pop here," Gordon said. "But that's what makes Rick such a special person, his family comes first."

Despite Gordon's statistical dominance, he was actually quite fortunate that he came first Sunday and that neither Ricky Rudd nor Sterling Marlin, the second and third-place finishers, stole his win. When Dale Earnhardt Jr. blew his engine on lap 172, bringing out the sixth caution of the day, Gordon, Rudd and Marlin entered the pits first, second and third, respectively. When the race went green again on lap 176, Marlin was first … and Gordon and Rudd were 10th and 11th, each the victim of poor pit stops.

And while both Gordon and Rudd had maneuvered themselves back to second and third by lap 188, Marlin had a commanding lead -- until Robert Pressley and John Andretti spun in turn 2, bringing another caution and bunching the field.

"Sterling definitely would have won this race had that [second-to-last] caution not come out," Rudd said. "You'd be sitting here talking about Sterling's win."

Gordon got an excellent jump on the re-start on lap 193 and took the lead. "We just went into the corner on the restart and the car didn't stick," Marlin said. "All day long, it took about two or three laps on the restarts to get going." As it was, the race was yet to deliver the defining moment of what had been a dull-but-typical, superspeedway afternoon.

When Shawna Robinson, making her first Winston Cup start, brought out the eighth and final caution of the day on lap 195, it gave Rudd one final, four-lap shot at Gordon, who again was pulling away from the field. Though Gordon held the lead for almost three of those laps, as the two entered the front stretch to take the white flag, Rudd ducked underneath and took the lead. As the two headed into the first turn, Gordon recovered and had pulled alongside Rudd. Then, in the blink of an eye, Gordon simply blew by Rudd on the outside between turns 1 and 2, taking the lead for good.

"I knew if I got the lead I'd have the preferred line," Gordon said. "But he made a smart move, went on the high side of me down in three and four and got a run. He got inside me and I thought I was done. I never drove so hard into turn one as I did on that last lap. [His car] went sideways, he checked up and I just jumped back into it and it just stuck."

"In hindsight, I probably should have [made my move] coming to the checkered flag, not the white-flag lap," Rudd said. "I got momentum on him, but we went into turn 1 and I couldn't get my car to turn. It was like it was on ice; had I kept the momentum going, I'd have slid both of us up into the guardrail."

Rudd, the consummate pro, didn't and the result was Gordon's win … followed by the boos. Expect them to grow louder in the coming weeks.

(standing on the side of the road with his thumb out) Excuse me, is this the overcrowded Jeff Gordon bandwagon? I seem to miss the bus everytime.

Fuck the "NASCAR golden boy". Sure he is a great racer, but he is also a crybaby and is nursed along by NASCAR. I don't dislike many things, but one thng I do is bandwagon jumpers. If you can explain why you are a fan, than state your case, but if you can't you discust me. (spits at the bus)

Honestly, I became a Gordon fan a few years ago, around 1997, is when i first got into NASCAR. Originally, the reason why i liked him was because he had some flash, and the rednecks all hated him and liked Earnhardt. He got no respect then because he was considered the babyface of the group, more of a Hollywood guy than a NASCAR guy. Now, I like him cause he's got great skills and he can back up whatever he says. He is da man, and will be better than Earnhardt ever was when he's done.

Good enough spiritofdirt?? And i do agree, I dont like the fact that all these people who used to like Earnhardt are starting to like Gordon now.

Yea i be taking that zoloff, but thaz jus keepin me from killin y'all.

Does anybody remember being in high school when you first got your license, and all the rich kids would come driving in with brand new cars mommy and daddy bought for them? They didn't do a damn thing but ask for one and they got it. Same thing with Gordon. To all of the real Earnhardt fans, and Rusty Wallace fans, and all the older guys in the sport, Gordon is that spoiled brat who took Daddy's money and bought himself into the sport. Now, is he a great driver, absolutely. Will he finish his career with more wins than Earnhardt, probably, he might even catch Petty. More championships, maybe, who knows. But what he'll never have what Earnhardt had was the satisfaction of knowing he did it all for himself. No body handed Earnhardt anything, he earned everything for himself. All Gordon's done is use everybody else's money during his way up the ladder to the pot of gold. Just ask Bill Davis about that.

You ask for a reason & I will give you one.

When I started watching racing in 1995 he was the new kid on the block. So being new to the NASCAR circut I went with the Rookie who had #24. That just happenes to be one off my lucky numbers. Also the day of my anniversary. Thats my reason for following him in the beggining. As for now he is one of the most dominate Driver in the sport.

If you dont like my reason go FUCK YOURSELF.

So what you are seying three fan is that you don't root for little E? Because if there is ANYONE on the Winston cup circut that did because of his Daddy and his Daddy's $ it's Jr., am I right? As for why I am a Gordon fan, I loved Davey Alison, but because that A-hole decided not to wear a helmet while piloting a chopper and trying to land on a postage stamp, I could not root for a dead man. Then, I stayed with the car and swervin' Ernie Ervin. Well guess what, he swerved into the wall in Michigan and lost an eye and was in the hospital for about a year. Soooo, there was this young up and comming (no jizz jokes please) driver with a cool looking car and lots of talent. That was about seven years ago. If you call that bandwagon jumping, (in psycho Marks voice) Go F yourself. I got all the old T-shirts, hats, etc... from the trailers in Dover and Pocono to prove it deek. Sooooo, lets go Jeff, win the cup, set cup and win records, and most of all, don't die f-tard. I don't need to find another car to root for.

I shucked it, and I shucked it, and I shucked it, i'm quite the mother shucker!

Actually, MS, Little E didn't get a damn thing from his father until he proved he was responsible and ready enough for it. He would rummage around in junkyards for parts to BUILD his first race car, not be given money to buy one.
Hey Tequila - I had to laugh a little. Your reason for picking Gordon is exactly the same reason one of my best friends picked him. We went to the 600 in '95, his first race, and he had no clue who anyone was. His favorite number is 24, and he picked him only on that basis.

Oh and by the way, I don't give a rat's ass as to who picks who and why. Just don't jump on the bandwagon cause your guy sucks, or someone else is kicking ass. THAT annoys the hell out of me.

.....Hello????...Is this thing on?.....Hello???

Did I say he had nothing to do with it? NO! What I said was that he made him learn to do for himself instead of handing him everything.
