Well, it finally happened. I actually think that Milbury made a good move. Holy shit did I say that? Wow. Muckalt, Chara, and the 2 for Yashin. I don't know who else was offered for the 2 but Yashin brings them a name at least. Spezza never really was an option here since Milbury couldn't afford to keep taking young guys. It would just continue his cyclical nature with regards to the prospects. And the important thing was that they didn't deal Connelly or Isbister.

But there's also this: there are over 5,000 men in this city, who know that being a policeman is an endless, glamourless, thankless job that's gotta be done.

I know it, too, and I'm damn glad to be one of them."

Not the only move made this week. I cant find anything on the Yashin trade but look at this one

(June 22) The move to get better a little bit quicker began today.

The Islanders have acquired defenseman Adrian Aucoin, he of the right-handed cannon from the point, and right wing/waterbug Alexander Kharitonov from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday in exchange for prospect defenseman Mathieu Biron and the Islanders’ 2002 second round draft pick.

“We’ve needed someone like an Aucoin for a while now,” said Islanders general manager Mike Milbury. “His shot will be an asset for our power play, but he’s also a steady player who will take a regular shift. There’s no doubt in our minds Mathieu is going to be a good player, but Aucoin’s still a young veteran will can help us immediately.”

The 27-year old Aucoin is likely to see plenty of time on the first power play unit with Roman Hamrlik. He appeared in 73 games with the Lightning and Vancouver Canucks last season, recording four goals, 29 points, a +5 rating along with 45 penalty minutes. The 6-2, 210 pound Aucoin was acquired by Tampa Bay from the Canucks on February 7, 2001 along with Vancouver’s 2001 2nd round pick for goaltender Dan Cloutier.

During his nearly six-year career with Vancouver, Aucoin tallied 50 goals and 82 assists in 367 games. His breakthrough season came in 1998-99 when he scored 23 goals and 34 points in 82 games. While a 23-goal season is not expected of Aucoin, his poise and shot – not to mention decent poise in his own end – figure to make the Islanders a better team on the power play next season.

The 25-year old Kharitonov, Tampa Bay’s 3rd round selection in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, appeared in 66 games this season and recorded seven goals and 22 points. The 5-6, 170 pound right wing was the Lightning's 81st overall selection in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft after a stellar 1999-2000 campaign in the Russian Super League. Kharitonov registered 34 points in his 35 games with Dynamo Moscow that season, placing him seventh in the league in scoring while leading his team in points.

Kharitonov played for Russia in the 2000 World Championships. He posted five points, including a short-handed goal) in six games and finished a plus-6 while playing along side Pavel Bure and Alexei Yashin.

Super-guy Matt Biron, 21, was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1998. After arriving on Long Island in the deal that saw Zigmund Palffy go to the Kings, the 6-7 dman played in 74 games over two seasons with the Islanders, notching four goals and five assists. He finished last season with Springfield (AHL).

Well Yashin will help them win more games than Spezza would this year at least. A lot of people (myself included) expected more out of the Isles last year and they just didn't deliver. Maybe Yashin will help to get more out of the young guys like Connelly and the rest.

And Aucoin is a decent D-man as well.

Senators part ways with Yashin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

With Alexei Yashin set to become a restricted free agent July 1, the Ottawa Senators finally pulled the plug on the relationship with their star center.

The Senators traded Yashin to the New York Islanders on Saturday in exchange for forward Bill Muckalt, defenseman Zdeno Chara and the No. 2 overall pick in the NHL entry draft.

According to reports, the Senators were entertaining offers from as many as seven teams prior to the draft today and Sunday in Sunrise, Fla.

Yashin, 27, made $3.6 million last year, but was seeking a healthy raise for next season. It's believed he would like close to the $8 million to $10 million per year most of the top players in the NHL are making.

Yashin was booed by fans, at the Corel Centre and at rinks on the road this season for his decision last season not to honor his contract in a bid for a raise or a trade.

He was forced to return and honor the last year of the deal and led the Senators with 40 goals and 48 assists in 82 games.

yeah Islander fans you should be proud, you finally landed a big name player.

But dont think that Alexei Yashin alone is going to end your misery and make you a contender.

Its a step in the right direction, but they need alot more than just Alexei Yashin to be a legitimate playoff contender.

Yeah, maybe we could be the team with the highest payroll in the league and STILL not make the playoffs fran.

shucker - lmao

well, it'll definitely help us a LOT this year, getting yashin. maybe if dumbass mike re-signs czerkawski, we'll actually have a good top line. and with aucoin on the roster, i think that freed up the space to move chara. well, we'll see in september/october. i don't think mike's done yet though. what i'd really like to see is on july 1 going after turgeon again - i'm sure he'd love to be back in his old home kicking some ass once again. that'd be fantastic.

one problem i have with the deal is:
what number is yashin going to wear? although they haven't officially retired it, no one's worn #19 since trotts. it's probably the best problem to have w/ yashin though, choosing a number, as opposed to all that contract bullshit he went through two years ago.

Im sorry I missed the part when I said anything about the Rangers, especially anything positive.

I know the Rangers have been pathethic, but theres always one saving grace that their is at least one team that is more pathethic.
