New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired right wing Mikael Samuelsson and defenseman Christian Gosselin in exchange for forward Adam Graves.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Adam for his 10 terrific years of service to the New York Rangers. What Adam has meant to the Rangers franchise and to the city of New York as a player and a person cannot be overstated," said Sather. "We wish Adam and his family continued success."

Samuelsson, 24, appeared in 66 games with the Kentucky Thoroughblades of the American Hockey League (AHL) last season, collecting 32 goals and 46 assists for 78 points, along with 58 penalty minutes. He ranked among the team’s leaders in several categories, including second in points (78), tied for second in goals (32), and fourth in assists (46). In post-season play, Samuelsson tallied one goal in three playoff contests.

The 6-1, 205-pounder skated for Brynas IF, Vastra Frolunda and Sodertalje SK of the Swedish Elite League prior to joining the San Jose organization last season. During the 1999-00 campaign, Samuelsson skated in 40 contests with Brynas IF, collecting four goals and three assists for seven points, along with 76 penalty minutes. In addition, he registered seven goals and two assists for nine points in 11 post-season matches with Brynas IF.

A native of Marieford, Sweden was originally selected by San Jose with their seventh choice, 145th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Gosselin, 24, appeared in 42 games with the Kentucky Thoroughblades of the AHL, collecting two goals and three assists for five points. He ranked sixth on the club with 145 penalty minutes. In post-season play, Gosselin recorded one assist and five penalty minutes in three contests.

The 6-5, 235-pounder has appeared in 147 professional contests with Kentucky and the Fredericton Canadiens (AHL), along with the Pensacola Ice Pilots of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). He has registered seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points, along with 571 penalty minutes. During the 1999-00 season, Gosselin ranked second on Kentucky with 266 penalty minutes.

A native of Laval, Quebec, Gosselin was originally selected by New Jersey with their fifth choice, 129th overall, in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He was signed as a free agent by San Jose on July 15, 1998.

Graves, 31, registered 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points, along with 77 penalty minutes in 82 matches last season. He was the 2000-01 recipient of the Masterton Memorial Trophy, given annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. In 10 seasons with the Rangers, he totaled 280 goals and 227 assists for 507 points, along with 810 penalty minutes in 772 contests. He ranks among the club’s all-time leaders in several categories including: goals (third, 280), assists (19th, 227) and points (10th, 507). A member of the 1994 Rangers Stanley Cup championship team, Graves also holds the Rangers single season scoring record with 52 goals during the 1993-94 campaign.

A native of Toronto, Ontario, Graves was originally selected with Detroit’s second choice, 22nd overall, in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. He was signed as a free agent by the Rangers on September 3, 1991.

who'd he get traded to? san jose? the article doesn't specify.
but even as an isles fan, i'm upset to see him go. he was a great player and a super guy, and even though i hated his guts on a nightly basis, i enjoyed watching him play.

Graves is quite happy to be leaving the Rangers from the articles that I read, but that's natural when you go to an instant contender.

It is just a sad day in Ranger lore that he is gone. Gravey was a great player for us and he scored one of the greatest goal I can remember outside of 94. Wrap around, anyone?

Sharks seem pretty happy with the deal.

For Immediate Release
June 24, 2001

Graves A Shark
Yesterday's rumor is now reality. Adam Graves is coming to San Jose. The Sharks sent prospects Mikael Samuelsson and Christian Gosselin to New York for Graves and future considerations. The future considerations are believed to be partial compensation for Graves contract as he is scheduled to make $4 million in 2001-02.

The move gives San Jose much needed depth and goal scoring on the left. Graves will join Marco Sturm, Alex Korolyuk, Stephane Matteau and Scott Thornton on that side.

Two seasons ago, Graves took home the NHL's Masterton Trophy for perseverance and dedication to hockey. He is also a previous winner of the King Clancy Trophy and has been selected the Rangers player's player award four times by his teammates.

Last season was a difficult one for Graves as he suffered through the loss of an infant son, as well as his father. Although his goal production dropped to 10, he managed to play in all 82 games. During the 1999-2000 and the 1998-99 campaigns, the former 50-goal scorer registered 23 and 38 goals respectively.

The 33-year-old has posted 20 or more goals in eight of his 14 seasons. His career numbers include 303 goals, 264 assists, 1,141 penalty minutes and 989 games played. He is a two-time Stanley Cup winner, skating the victory lap in 1994 with the Rangers and in 1990 with Edmonton. During New York's 1993-94 championship season, Graves registered a career-high 52 goals.

Standing six-foot tall and weighing 205 pounds, Graves plays hard and has made his living going to the net. Some speculate if the gritty player's body has too much wear on it.

"If you're asking if Adam has several years left, yes, I think he does," said Wilson. "He maintains a high fitness level and has such a strong work ethic."

Sharks General Manager Dean Lombardi has been after Graves for years and has finally acquired his man.

"He is still a fit," said Lombardi. "He is a playoff type player who we think was in a similar situation as Damphousse. He needed a change."

Graves contract expires after the coming season.

"One of our first orders of business is to try and get him signed and to try and get term that works for the club," said Lombardi.

Its real real sad to see Graves go. he is my all time favorite Ranger, and a True Ranger who was an even better man off the ice then on the ice.

I can only hope that the Rangers give Adam Graves the true honor he deserves and raise his #9 jersey to the rafters alongside #1, #7, and the #2,#11, and #35 that will be there in the waiting years.

Sure Graves has been ineffective the last few years, but he is old worn down and his back injury has caught up to him. But he is still a great leader, and was one of the Great True Rangers of all time.

I hope that San Jose makes a trip to the Garden this year, which is not guaranteed as nearly half of the teams against the other conference, you only play once.

But this is a move the Rangers had to make, because Adam Graves just cant give you in 2001 what you need. Im not even too sure why San Jose made this deal. I guess they are hoping that Graves can add a spark their and provide some veteran leadership, but Ive seen just about every game Adam Graves has played the last 10 years, and Adam Graves on the ice now is not half the player he was 5-6 years ago.

I wish Adam all the best of luck with the Sharks, and if various other players who still wear the blue shirts for the Rangers had half the heart and grit of Adam Graves, the Rangers would not be in the sad state of positioning they have been the past 4 years.

Matteau and Graves together again. When the Sharks play the Devils, Marty Blo-Deur better watch is left side.

Word cannot do justice as to what Graves meant to this city and to this franchise. He will be greatly missed.
Good Luck #9

He was a great Ranger, but even a better person. He was the one who did the MSG children program at MSG for Christmas, where he would sign an autograph for anyone who brought a toy for a kid.

I'll miss him as he was one of my favorite players on the Rangers. He deserves to go someplace that has a chance of winning again.

Good luck Gravy.

Two weeks ago I met Adam his beautiful wife and his
wonderful kids at a party on the beach in Rye.

I got to ask him all sorts of shit about hockey and especially
about life and stuff.

I have never met a nicer guy. He'll be SO missed not only by
Ranger fans, but by the thousands of people he helps with
all of his incredible charities.

I wish the guy the best out wes

I hate the rangers, but i liked the way Graves played. I had the jersey he wore in the last game of the finals in 94. It is autographed. I kinda wished he went to the isles, this way they could have a veteran leader.

Your statement in another thread about expecting the Islanders to win the Cup in 2 years would have a better chance of happening than the Rangers trading Graves to the Islanders

Potvin Sucks refers to Denis Potvin. He was a top Islander defenseman back in the day, he is also hated by every Ranger fan. "Potvin Suck" is a popular chant at the Garden even to thi day. During a game once he gave Ulf Nillson a cheap shot breaking his leg. Actually, I'm not exactly sure it was Nillson or if it was his leg, but Potvin did something of that caliber to someone, and this is why he will always be hated at MSG. I think he's a TV analyst with the Panthers now.

I was a huge Ranger fan in high school and used to hang out before and after games to get autographs. Graves was the guy who not only signed every thing but hung out for 5 or 10 minutes talking hockey and stuff with the fans. If he saw yuou a few times he'd recognize your face and say hello. I'll always remember him as a true class act.

That's going overboard, just a LITTLE bit. He was a good team player, but a GREAT representative of the team in the community. A new start out west will hopefully be the thing he needs to erase the bad memories (baby & dad)

Thats not going overboard at all. He still holds the Rangers single season record for Goals scored and is a leader in most of the major Categories in Rangers History.

If Clark Gillies can have his #9 retired, why cant Adam Graves?
