Gwynn set to announce retirement

SAN DIEGO -- Tony Gwynn, arguably the best pure hitter of his generation, is expected to announce today that he will retire at the end of this season, his 20th with the San Diego Padres.

The Padres scheduled a news conference for this afternoon at Qualcomm Stadium, saying only that it will involve Gwynn and team officials.

A baseball source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Wednesday evening that he understood that an announcement was to be made after the team returned from a six-day trip that ended Wednesday night in Colorado.

Earlier Wednesday, USA Today's Baseball Weekly reported on USAToday.com that Gwynn will retire at season's end.

"Nobody wants to believe it now," Gwynn told Baseball Weekly from his hotel room in Denver, "but I knew this would be my last year before the year started. It was predetermined. No matter what I did this year, I knew it would be my last.

"I'll have a press conference to get it off my chest, and then I'll be at peace."

Gwynn was not available for comment after San Diego's 10-9 loss to the Rockies.

Padres teammate Rickey Henderson said Gwynn had informed him of the decision.

"He told me he was going to announce it, I think when we get back home," Henderson said. "I don't know if he has told the whole team. But we talked yesterday, and he said he was going to announce his retirement."

Gwynn, 41, has struggled to get back into the Padres' outfield because of a strained right hamstring that's sidelined him for most of the season.

Gwynn, an eight-time NL batting champion who is 16th on the all-time list with 3,124 hits, has strongly hinted for a month that this would be his final season.

On May 29, he told reporters he would like to be the baseball coach at his alma mater, San Diego State, when the job opens in June 2002. Although he wouldn't say it publicly at the time, that would rule out him playing next season.

"There wouldn't be a better recruiting tool in the country than to say, `Come to San Diego State and be tutored by one of the best hitters to ever play the game,'" Padres closer Trevor Hoffman said.

Gwynn ran in the outfield before Wednesday night's game.

its a shame that Gwynn wont get nearly as much attention for this as Ripken did. Gwynn was a better player.

It's sad, this is another of the old guard leaving. Here's another class-act, probably one of the most professional men to play the game in the last 20 years. I hope he stays active and in the spotlight in some capacity, losing his presence would be a huge loss to baseball in this time of big egos.

if Gwynn were to get another 900 at-bats, and not get a hit in any of them, he would still be a career .300 hitter.

he was an amazing hitter....one of the all-time greats.

Gwynn was one of the more graceful players in the game. He was loyal to the Padres and their city, He never got into a scandal, or held out for more $. Above all, he was consistently one of the best hitters, a clutch performer. Next stop Cooperstown.
