Yanks bolster bullpen with addition of Wohlers

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees acquired reliever Mark Wohlers from the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, bolstering their bullpen with a hard thrower who has overcome control problems and major surgery.

The Reds got minor league pitching prospect Ricardo Aramboles in the deal and saved more than $1 million, a big consideration for the budget-strapped club.

"We think we have done some minor things in the payroll-wise, but in terms of the personnel we have added some major contributors," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said during Madison Square Garden Network's telecast of Saturday's game with Tampa Bay.

"The Yankees have proven the last four or five years that they will take do what it takes to win," Wohlers said. "I hope to be part of that puzzle."

The 31-year-old Wohlers, a right-hander, was one of the majors' top closers in the mid-1990s, getting the final out in Atlanta's World Series win over Cleveland in 1995.

An injury to his side in 1998 started a career slide.

Wohlers lost his ability to throw strikes and the Braves traded him to the Reds in 1999. He overcame an anxiety disorder and was pitching well in the minors later that season when he tore the ligament in his right elbow, requiring reconstructive surgery.

He went 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 20 games last season. He had no problems with his control this season, going 3-1 with a 3.94 ERA in 30 relief appearances with a fastball regularly clocked at 97 mph.

Wohlers was the only Reds player with a no-trade clause. He was called off the field Saturday while running sprints in the outfield and agreed to waive the clause to join the Yankees.

"It will be tough saying goodbye," Wohlers said. "I wanted to make sure with (Reds general manager) Jim Bowden, that I'm not burning bridges, that I'm not jumping ship when things are going bad. They (the Reds) are getting a young prospect which is what they need."

He has a $500,000 base salary this season and a mutual option at $4 million for 2002 with a $1 million buyout. Essentially, the Reds save the $1 million buyout plus what's left of his salary.

The 19-year-old Aramboles was signed by Florida in 1996, but major league baseball later voided the contract. He signed with the Yankees in February 1998, getting a $1.52 million singing bonus.

The right-hander was 1-3 with a 3.04 ERA in four games for Triple-A Columbus. He has spent the rest of his career in rookie leagues or Class A.

The thing is the Mets have no prospects of value outside of Escobar. That's what happens when you make all sorts of trades like that and didn't have much to begin with. I doubt many teams would be interested in a package headlined by a fat Hawaiian.

As for Wohlers, I think it's stupid. I can just see Cleveland signing Leyritz just to psyche him out come playoff time.

But there's also this: there are over 5,000 men in this city, who know that being a policeman is an endless, glamourless, thankless job that's gotta be done.

I know it, too, and I'm damn glad to be one of them."

i like the addition of wohlers. he is only 31 (i thought he was much older), and he can throw 98. he can be the set-up man, or he can act as a closer if mariano is unable to go for some reason.

plus, they didn't give up too much. i never even heard of the guy we traded.

i have adopted DiceSux on 6/22. E-Mail Me or IM me at Okterrific771 if you would like to be adopted.

The guy is one of the numerous hispanic players the yankees always seem to have. I doubt he would be a valuable part of the team. Probably a setup type guy but who the hell cares anyway. But I think that El Duquecito is better than him anyway.
