Stars agree to deal with LW Kamensky
July 3, 2001

DALLAS (TICKER) -- The Dallas Stars have agreed to a contract with free agent left wing Valeri Kamensky, who was a major disappointment in his two seasons with the New York Rangers.

Stars spokesman Mark Janko said the deal can become official on Thursday, when Kamensky clears waivers as part of his contract with the Rangers.

The 35-year-old Kamensky collected just 27 goals in his two seasons with the Rangers after signing as a free agent. The Russian averaged 27 goals in three seasons with the Colorado Avalanche from 1995-98.

Kamensky has 60 career points in 64 playoff games and was a member of Colorado's Stanley Cup-winning team in 1996.

The deal continues a busy offseason for the Stars, who already have signed free agents Pierre Turgeon, Rob DiMaio and Donald Audette.

That's one way to look at it... but another way is to look at that concentration of power in three teams (with St. Louis on the outskirts there) as something that benefits the eastern teams.

Those powerhouses in the west are going to kick the living shit out of each other in the early rounds, and they won't have much left in the tank for the finals.

I think Detroit is starting to look a little bit interesting - they just keep getting older, but now they've got the goaltending if that headcase Hasek performs like he can and doesn't spend all playoffs trying to draw penalties by flailing around like a beached fucking whale!

Colorado, Dallas, St. Louis..those are the three teams that will emerge as the tops in the Campbell Confrence. in the Wales, you got New Jersey, Ottawa, and maybe Philadelphia

We have to wait and see what the rest of this off season holds. I do not think the shifting is over just yet.

Hehehe, the Wales. Those were the days. I used to love calling the Norris division the "Snorris division."

Philadelphia will definitely be up there again. They managed to grab a great spot last year with Leclair hurt all year and Lindros sitting out. Plug in a healthy Leclair, an excited Roenick (I've never seen a player that legitimately excited to be playing for a team) and a couple more tweak moves by Bobby Clarke and I think they'll give the Devils a real run for their money.

Ottawa should definitely be up there, but they're such a flaky team at times you never know!

I was trying to figure out if the Islanders would make the playoffs (and my own pathetic team, les Canadiens) and - damn, teams are just tough in general. What will Florida do with the two Bure brothers? What will Boston do with Lapointe and a new coach? What will Montreal do if they're actually healthy? What will Toronto do now that they've got Mogilny?

Many questions this off-season for sure!

Kamensky will die, just like he does every season, for stretches at a time. I kept taking him in my hockey pool every year, but I should have taken him in my death pool. The guy is truly peanut brittle on skates.

There was talk that he was going to end up with the Canucks because he had an affinity for Marc Crawford, but I guess that wasn't to be.

Maybe Ken Hitchcock will kick the shit out of him and get his ass in gear? I dunno, it seems like he always had potential, but never lived up to it, even in his glory days in Colorado.
