A-Rod changes mind after talking with officials

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

Giants outfielder Barry Bonds, who has a record 39 home runs before the All-Star break, has confirmed he will participate in Monday night's Home Run Derby (8 p.m. on ESPN) at Safeco Field.

Bonds, who has not homered in 12 games and 39 at-bats, will be joined by the Cubs' Sammy Sosa, Bret Boone of the Mariners, Luis Gonzalez of the Diamondbacks, Todd Helton of the Rockies and Rangers shortstop Alex Rodriguez.

Earlier in the week, Rodriguez said he wasn't participating, but he changed his mind Saturday.

Rodriguez, who left the Mariners in the offseason to become baseball's highest-paid player with the Texas Rangers, said he changed his mind after talking with officials in the commissioner's office.

"They feel it's in the game's best interest for me to do it, and that's what I want to do," Rodriguez said before Saturday night's game against San Diego.

"I know I'm going to take my abuse, but that's fine. I think it'll be good for baseball and I'm going to try to go out and enjoy it."

Rodriguez, voted to start at shortstop for the AL, was booed loudly in the Rangers' two visits to Seattle this year. He originally didn't want to participate in the home run derby for the same reason.

"I didn't want to be a distraction for everyone and have that be the theme of the home run contest, them booing me," said Rodriguez, who has 25 homers. "Hopefully this will be better and more enjoyable."

Rodriguez received a record $252 million, 10-year free-agent contract from the Rangers in December.

Yankees dominate the All Star Game. Torre should have picked more Yankees for the All Star Team.

Clemens= 2 innings of no hit ball
Jeter= Hits home run in only at bat
Pettitte= scoreless inning
Mike Stanton= retired the 2 guys he faced
Posada= Doubled in only at bat.
Bernie= 0-1
Torre= 4 straight wins as AL manager. 20-10 now overall against Bobby valentine

Piazza= 0-2 and made one of the worst throws to second I have ever seen in my life
Valentine= Another loss for him. He's used to it.

Mets suck!!!

Even the best players of the National (minor)League couldn't score for old Bobby V. Shows you how bad the NL really is, only getting one run and all.

These Yankees have now beat Cleveland, Atlanta (twice), the Mets for titles. Now you can add the NL all star team to that list.

Was anyone else pissed that not only did Ripken's announcement of his retirement get him his 3rd consecutive undeserved start at 3rd base...but he gets a BP, belt-high Fastball grooved to him in his first at-bat. He produces the first run, not the game-winner, and GETS THE FUCKING M.V.P.?!?!? I am nauseated by this fucking guy...in the coffin already!!

I agree with Ripken MVP was cheap, but who else should get it? Chan Ho Park for serving up the Meatball for Ripken to hit out? Maggio for getting 2 hits? There was no clear cut Guy that deserved it, so I guess that I can live with Ripken.

He deserved the MVP, and what is it about him that offends you. Why because he took a spot away from Scott Brosius or something?

I highly doubt Chan Ho Park said here you go Cal, Hit a Homerun off me. Even if he did groove one in there, thats still no guarantee that your going to hit one out of the Park. Just check the Homerun Derby for that, where more 75% of the time they didnt hit a Homerun.

My point is when you think of MVP, you think of someone who takes of the game all by himself, like Jeter did last year. Ripken did hit the homer, but did he take over the game? That's all I'm saying.

And Brosius really isn't having an all star year.

Francine Banger....

I know, there really was no clear cut MVP, but I've been an anti-Cal guy for a long time. No real reason, same reason I hated George Brett for killing the Yanks year in and year out, but loved him once he retired because he was a great player. But Ripken was one of those guys, even now that he is a shell of his former self and no threat, I still can't stand him. It drives me nuts that he is so revered for showing up to work every day for 20-some years. It's not like he broke the 56-game hitting streak...he broke the record that ended for the previous guy because he was dying.

I just hate Ripken and always will, can't wait for the end of his season/career and this gave me another reason to vent. Yes, I'm a Yankee fan, but not a blind one...I thought that 7 Yankees was overdoing it, and Brosius DEFINITELY didn’t deserve to go. Troy Glaus will obviously get a few All Star starts unless his swing blows up, but look at a guy like Corey Koskie. He's on pace to hit 25 HRs and drive in 110 runs and is hitting 20 points higher than Ripken with about a dozen steals. He could have made it in a year where there were no obvious choices other than Glaus, but may never sniff All Star level again.
