Last night I wrote a few articulate pages on two of the most prestigious offensive records being challenged this season in baseball. One a little, well a lot more, publicized than the other. But I wasn't signed in so Fuck me. Heres the sorta abridged version.
Bonds is challenging the two year old McGwire HR record of 70.
More quietly, Arizona's Luis Gonzalez is strongly contending for, what is in my opinion the greatest offensive accomplishment there is, for the offensive triple crown.
Going into last nights action, and also the last weekend before the midway point of the season, Gonzalez was 2nd in NL batting average, 2nd in HR, and 1st in RBI

BA. 1. Alou-HOU .368
2.Gonzalez-ARI .356
3.Helton-COL .355

HR. 1.Bonds-SF 39
2. Gonzalez-ARI 35
3. Sosa-CHI 27

RBI 1.Gonzalez-ARI 84
2.Helton-COL 82
3.Walker-COL 78

Personally I am far less than compelled by Bonds pursuit of the 2 year old record. McGwire and Sosa sucked all the fun out of that record after it stood for 37 years. The Triple Crown was last hit for in 1967 by Carl Yazstremski and was not seriously challenged since Gary Sheffield's last year in SD (I think that was 92). In my opinion it is the greatest testament to the overall ability of a hitter and I would much rather see Gonzalez hit for the 3Crown rather than see Bonds hit 71 . This is my opinion for no other reason than the HR record does not facinate me that much after the drama of '98 and all those years in the 90's where it was being pursued. Its not cause I don't like Bonds. And personally I would like to see a 3crown winner in my lifetime (I'm 20).

WHAT would you guys rather see, and WHY?

The Triple Crown would be great to see, but I wouldln't count out Helton in that race. If something happens to Bonds and Luis Gonzalez's power numbers slide, you could see a two way battle for the triple crown in the NL.

But to answer your question I would definitely like to see someone win the triple crown rather then break the home run record. A player would have to have a pretty amazing offensive season to win the crown, especially with the numbers players are putting up these days

See I feel they are 2 different things. Bonds and Gonzo's run at the HR record is just that a record . The triple crown is an award. I feel the HR record is more of a feat. The Triple Crown is for your league for that specific year. So you're basically competeing against 300 guys in your league, while when going for a ML Record you're going against all that have ever played. That's in the 10's of thousands.

I would rather see the HR record broken.

Helton is batting .316 as of today.

Here' my pick for the Triple Crown
HR RBI AVG.
Manny Ramirez 25 1st 82 1st .333 5th

Holy Shit, Espn.com has Helton listed at 355 on one page and 316 on another. Thats a big fuck up.

Barry Bonds is challenging Mark McGwire's record of 70. How is he going against every player that has ever played?
The Triple Crown is not an AWARD. Awards get handed out anually and are voted on by a certain panel of judges. If you hit top average, HR, and RBI in your league you are the triple crown winner. Its not AWARDED TO YOU, and the feat cannot be taken away from you.
And you are actually competing against the 350 or so other players in the league against you that year. How can you say Bonds is competeing against Slappy Jones of the 1939 Washington Senators?

Oh Whackbag...trying to get your point across with the caps??? Tool.

I make sure to stay away from threads started by you.

The NHL whas an award for the person that scores the most...Is that voted on??? I think not. Your definition of an award is wrong.

DrunkenGW, sorry about the caps. I wasn't trying to be a dick but only put them in cause sometimes I skim post and stop to read the whole paragraph when something catches my eye.

Second, AWARD
1 : to give by judicial decree or after careful consideration
2 : to confer or bestow as being deserved or merited or needed
synonym see GRANT

The NHL has a scoring title for most points, goals, etc...

Don't avoid all my posts, you might learn something. Tool.

No offense to you two scholars, but..
Who gives a rats ass what the definition of "award" is!?!
IT DOESN"T MATTER!
To win the Triple Crown is an amazing feat.
As is hitting 80 homeruns, which I don't think Bonds will do. He has a history of choking.

If I have to chose between the two, I would
like to see Gonzo win the Triple Crown.
But what I really want to see is a 30 game winner.

I think someone breaking Joe D's streak would be special. But it doesn't look like it'll happen in our lifetime.

The Sleeper, I get what you're saying, but that is what people said about the Homerun record and Consecutive game record.

I would like to see the Mets get a hit with runners in scoring position.

A Met to steal a base.

Todd Pratt to make contact.

But I think we have a better chance of Joe D's streak being broken then seeing those 3 happening.

I think the Mets lost their team speed when they got rid of Mike Hampton. Not to mention their power.

i would wanna see someone break Teddy Ballgames (ted Williams) batting average record and i would also like to see someone at least challenge Joe Dimaggio's 56 game hit streak. not break it but just challenge it, like get to like 40 and then lose it.

And the Mets lost their team speed when they got rid of Cedeno 2 years ago. they lost their pitching when they got rid of Hampton

The coolest thing that i would want to see is someone hit a solo homer, 2 run homer, 3 run homer, and grand slam in the same game. I dont think that has ever happened but that would be something truly special.

On a more realistic note, i would want to see the mariners break the single season mark for wins in a season and have them lose in the playoffs.

Yea i be taking that zoloff, but thaz jus keepin me from killin y'all.
I have come here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of bubblegum. :)
