Report: Knicks meet with Olajuwon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

New York Knicks representatives met with Hakeem Olajuwon in Houston on Tuesday, joining the list of suitors for the free agent center, the Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday.

Olajuwon, 38, has had meetings with the Indiana Pacers, Toronto Raptors, Miami Heat and Houston Rockets.

The Pacers and Heat both have $4.5 million midlevel exceptions to offer Olajuwon if the 12-time All-Star cannot work out a deal with the Rockets -- his team of 17 seasons.

In their concern over retaining Shandon Anderson, Maurice Taylor and Moochie Norris and staying below the luxury tax level -- projected at $54.5 million -- the Rockets are under-bidding for the best player in franchise history by offering a two-year, $9.1 million contract.

Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson reiterated Tuesday that re-signing Olajuwon, one of the club's five free agents, remains the No. 1 priority.

"The only thing we've been trying to do is get the Dream thing solved, and nothing can happen until then," Dawson said.

"There's a lot of people coming in visiting him that need our help to get him, and I've been talking to them. But I keep telling them our first order of business is to sign him ourselves, and we'll talk to them later if that doesn't work out."

The Raptors are wooing the Dream with the $5 million exception they gained by trading Charles Oakley to Chicago for a draft choice.

The Knicks, who signed Allan Houston to a $100.4 million contract Monday and used their mid-level cap exception on former Cavaliers forward Clarence Weatherspoon, would need to engineer a sign-and-trade deal with the Rockets if they want to acquire Olajuwon.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, who lead the league in centers of dubious health and talent, on Monday were the latest to join the list of Dream chasers. The Cavaliers are in the midst of major rebuilding and have just $1.2 million of wiggle room under the salary cap.

Getting Olajuwon would be stupid. So I would probably say Scott Layden is on the verge of doing it because has he done anything in his tenure as GM Of the Knicks that wasnt stupid?

Well, i would have to agree with Francine on this one. Scott Layden is an idiot, and we dont need an aging center like olajawon. If we did, we would still have Ewing here. Anyway, Camby has gained 20 pounds already this offseason (hopefully in muscle), so we dont need a center. WHht we need is a point guard not named Mark Jackson or Charlie Ward, and a GM not named Scott Layden.

Rockets add extra year, $2M to Olajuwon offer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

HOUSTON -- The Houston Rockets have increased their offer to center Hakeem Olajuwon to include a third guaranteed year and an added $2 million in salary, Houston radio station KILT reported Monday.

That would make the Rockets' offer a three-year deal worth at least $10 million, the station said.

The Rockets declined comment.

Olajuwon, whose entire pro career has been with the Rockets, played out the final year of his contract with Houston that paid him $16.5 million last season. He said early last season he would retire but later changed his mind.

The Rockets want to re-sign Olajuwon but the future Hall of Famer takes up more than $24 million on the Rockets' salary cap space.

Olajuwon, the top overall pick in the 1984 draft, was the league's Most Valuable Player in 1994. He became the only player to win honors as MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and MVP of the championship finals.

im suprised that the knicks didnt make the deal.
they have been making bad deals for years.
$100 million for a guy who disappears in the playoffs and isnt even in the top 5 at his position. that deal guarantees that they will be mediocre for years to come. good but not good enough.

Why don't they offer Ralph Sampson or Robert Parrish a deal to come out of retirement than?

Great, just what we need, another washed up has been that we can pay a shitload of money to. A center who can't jump, rebound, run, play d, or score anymore. He'd make a perfect fit.
