Despite his epic slump, Mets third baseman Robin Ventura has drawn the interest of at least one club: the Yankees.

Sources told the Daily News yesterday that the Yankees called the Mets to ask about Ventura as they wait for Scott Brosius to return from a broken left hand. No offer was made and one major league executive said a deal did not seem likely.

But the teams are exploring the idea of moving Ventura from the defending NL champs to the defending world champs. A Subway Series might be out of the question in October, but a Subway Swap is possible in August.

"(The Yankees) are looking at a lot of third base options," one baseball official said.

Ventura is in a 3-for-33 slump and shows no signs of coming out of it, and when he cleared major league waivers earlier this month, Mets GM Steve Phillips made it clear he was willing to move his struggling third baseman. For the season, Ventura is hitting .231 with 18 home runs and 45 RBI.

The Yankees are not on his no-trade list, so the only obstacle in a deal would be the tollbooth on the Triboro Bridge.

The Red Sox are also believed to be interested in Ventura, though sources said they were not sure if GM Dan Duquette had called Steve Phillips. The Red Sox are on Ventura's no-trade list. Any Red Sox interest could be enough to keep the Yankees involved, though. George Steinbrenner has ordered GM Brian Cashman to make moves for defensive purposes before.

Ventura and the Mets are not sure why he has lost the ability to hit, though Ventura said he has heard no shortage of theories.

"I have a lot of coaches," he said.

Ventura has been suffering through a 3-for-33 slump.
Ventura has one more year at $8 million remaining on his contract. The Mets would like to move him and the remainder of his salary to make room for a major acquisition next season. The team also maintains a distant hope that the Phillies will change their minds and trade the embittered Scott Rolen before next season.

Some Mets officials, however, think Ventura is still suffering from shoulder and wrist injuries and could contribute next season if he gets healthy.

The Yankees have been looking into third base options since Brosius' left hand was broken by an inside pitch Aug. 1. Brosius was hitting .295 at the time, but his contract is up this season, and the organization has not said whether it intends to bring him back next year. He arrived in Tampa yesterday to continue his rehabilitation and could be back with the team by early September.

Ventura, who as a lefthanded hitter would benefit from the short porch in Yankee Stadium's right field, could also serve as a one-year bridge to Drew Henson, who is struggling at Triple-A Columbus. Ventura has one year remaining on his contract.

If the teams pulled off a deal it would be their first since 1993, when Frank Tanana went to Queens and Kenny Greer went to the Bronx.

PLEASE YANKEES!!!
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!! TAKE HIM OFF OUR HANDS!!
I BEG YOU!!

Do you have a nice toaster oven in the Press Box you can trade for him. Ill take it!!

But then again, we all know that if Robin Ventura heads over to the Bronx, all of a sudden he will find his swing. He will hit 8 Homeruns in September, hit about .300, get some clutch hits in the Playoffs and help the Yankees to another World Championship.

You are right FB. He might even win MVP of the World Series. Seriously, I would love to have him because he was proven unlike Bellinger or Sojo, who is just good as a pinchhitter in the playoffs. Hey Tino found his swing, why can't Ventura. A change of scenery would do him good and 3rd base is something the Yankees need right now. Get Ventura for the rest of this year and next year. Sign Tino for one more year. Release Brosious. Bring up Nick Johnson and Drew Henson in 2003 and have an all come through the yankee farm system infield as of 2003.

I think it would work for both teams.

YES!!!!!!! Please tell me this is true. I want Ventura outta here ASAP. In fact, i think the yanks can use a backup shortstop, so take Ordonez too.

When he is on the DL in June after running out his double play ball like the gimp he is, I will have to bring this back to the top. He will finish '02 with 7 homers. And we saved money to spend on Mo and Robbie.

Ventura hit 2 homers with 4 RBIs on opening day last year. He had 1 HR and 3 RBIs the rest of April, and proceeded to bat .235 with 19 HRs, 57 RBIs and 100 K's the rest of the season.

I wouldn't start celebrating just yet. He's got 159 games to come back to normal.

On a related note, David Justice is hitting .467 with 2 HR and 7 RBI...

I think Ventura will have a decent year and put up better numbers than last year. But so what? So will Justice, Alfonzo, and Zeile. They were all injured most of last year (minus Zeile), and all had off years. What's your point?

Boy, as a Met fan, I must say I was bothered for like two seconds when I saw Ventura's two homers, but then I remembered one thing:

IF WE DIDN'T TRADE HIM, WE WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN ALOMAR!

And then I remembered:

HE DID THE SAME THING LAST YEAR TO START THE SEASON AND LOOK HOW THAT ENDED UP!

And then, all of a sudden, the thoughts of Alomar hitting .330, 25 HRs, 120 RBIs, 120 runs scored, and Ventura getting booed lustily at Yankee Stadium in August made me feel alot better.

Of course, knowing Yankee fans, they won't boo Ventura, they only boo scrubs like Jason Giambi

On that note, you know, I was embarrassed when Met fans booed Piazza in the 1998 season, but this was just as bad, if not worse yesterday. Yankee fans should be ashamed of the few thousands of dumbasses yesterday who brought shame to the Yankee fandom as a whole.

But then, just like the Piazza booing was brought on my mindless know nothing about baseball Todd Hundley fans who fail to realize just how insignificant Hundley was EVEN WHEN HE WAS GOOD compared to Piazza, this was brought on by mindless Tino Martinez fans who fail to realize the same thing. At least Giambi didn't embarass himself in the 99 and 2000 seasons unlike Tino and is the best power hitting lefty not named Bonds in the majors, not to mention a former MVP, and the guy you should be worshipping every second you exist like Met fans do to Piazza. Tino was a nice guy and he played good D at the most insignifacant defensive position in baseball. Whoop dee fucking doo. Reggie Jackson was an asshole, but I bet you loved him if you were around then!
