On Monday, the MadDog on the FAN was talking about this and he was saying no. O&A were in best of that day. He was stating that even though Clemens has the best record in the majors, he seems to face all of the soft teams while a Mulder on Oakland has more losses but a better ERA and has faced better teams. Here are the stats of the 4 people who have the best chance at AL CY Young. As a Yankee fan, maybe I am a little partial but at 16-1, I say hell yeah.

Player TEAM W L ERA G GS CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB SO
1. T Hudson OAK 14 6 2.99 26 26 3 0 180.1 152 64 60 15 53 140
2. F Garcia SEA 14 4 3.26 25 25 3 2 174.0 150 70 63 11 51 107
3. M Mulder OAK 15 6 3.20 25 25 5 4 171.2 161 64 61 14 32 116
4. R Clemens NYY 16 1 3.46 25 25 0 0 169.0 154 71 65 15 53 170

Got to keep in mind that Chris Russo is a Yankee hater, he never has a nice thing to say about them or any of their players. He also has nothing nice to say about their history or what the organization has accomplished since the 1900s.

The soft team arguement is weak at best. With the unbalanced schedule you take your turn when your turn comes up. Besides pulling Clemens from the Mets game in Shea to avoid a riot, he has not really missed a turn.

Love Clemens or hate him, he is still 16 - 1 against major league teams.

I don't listen to the FAN as much as I used to but those two guys are way too narrow minded for me now.

I know that was one fo the few times I turned the FAN on besides the weekend. I agree he has total hatred for the Yankees, but he was saying it seems the yankees shield him from facing the good teams.

I think Russo is a dick, but I just thought it would be a good topic to discuss as even though Clemens is 16-1, there are 3 other guys in the AL who are also having unbeleivable seasons as well.

i think clemens deserves it. sure he doesn't have any complete games and he has pitched less innings than the other contenders, but he has the bullpen to back him up so it doesn't really matter. whenever clemens takes the mound, the yankees win. (i think they're 22-3 when he starts)

you can't argue with his numbers, and he's doing it at such an old age, in baseball terms.

There is no question Roger Clemens has had a phenomenal season. BUT! He does face the Soft teams it seems like, and EVERY TIME you see that Roger Clemens is pitching. By the Fourth Inning the Yankees have about 6 or 7 runs. Ive never seen somebody get so much run support.

Heres a nice comparison.

Roger Clemens 16-1 3.46 ERA
Al Leiter 7-10 3.44 ERA

Give the Cy young to the Rock lookalike, Freddy Garcia.

Id give it to Freddy Garcia and Tim Hudson before i gave it to Roger Clemens. And Mark Buherle from the White Sox has to be considered as well.

Clemens always wins his games 8-6, where he strikes out 11 but only pitches 6 to 7 innings. The offense for the yanks always picks it up when he pitches.

how the hell can you say clemens doesn't deserve the cy young? he is 16-1 with a 3.4 era. if his era was about 4 then you would have a case but not here. if he goes about 19 or 20 and 2 with an era under 3.5 he should be a lock to get it. if not than it would be worse than when hentgen STOLE the award from pettite a few years back.

Clemens definitely deserves it. How can you say he
only pitches against soft teams? He pitches a
regular rotation against almost every team the
yankees play. It's not his fault most teams are
soft compared to the Yankees :p

I'd say of all those people, either Hudson or Mulder deserve it.

Look at Hudson's numbers since April, and their unbelievable.

Mulder has 5 complete games, four of them shutouts. He's also gotten better every month.

Clemens hasn't faced "weak" teams. That's just foolish. The schedule is 162 games, and will even out, but he's got a much higher ERA, and has been walking a lot of people this year too. He leads the AL in Ks, but not by much.

I'd say Mulder or Hudson in a tossup, then Clemens over Garcia.

wouldn't be suprised if he wins it, but I still
gotta root for my Yankee

As a Mets fan, even I say Clemens deserves the Cy young award this year. Even at his age, Clemens has been very consistent.

Russo is just pissed because the Yanks stayed loyal to their hometown while the Giants turned gay on NY and went to SF.

I am the biggest yankee fan, but shouldn't yesterday have been Clemens day to pitch against the Mariners instead of today against Texas. I hate to say it, but the angry Mutt might actually have some validity to his comments. Also he just happened to miss pitching in the Oakland series as well.

Im with you Filzy, even a Met fan can see Clemens should win the Cy Young...Even though he wont face a good team until the playoff's, u cant change the stats and at 16-1 3.46 he's obviously leader in the clubhouse.

we dont hang out in you garbage so please dont trash our message board

isn't he a dick in the clubhouse?
and i hate that he's a leader stuff yankee fans always bring up. isn't lenny 'i can't do anything but pinch hit' harris considered a leader in the clubhouse. does that mean you want him on the yankees?

and i dont know if he should win but if he did win it's kind of hard to argue against.

I'm a Yankee fan. But I don't believe Clemens deserves the Cy Young because he has faced softer teams. Check out below to see the games he pitched.

KC- Win, gave up 3 earned runs in 8.1 ip's
Toronto- Win, gave up 5 earned runs in 6.2 ip's
Boston- no decision, gave up 2 runs in 6 ip's
Toronto- no decision, gave up 5 earned runs in 6 ip's
Seattle- no decision, 4 earned runs in 7 ip's
Oakland- Win, 1 earned run in 7.1 ip's
Baltimore- no decsion, 4 earned runs in 5.2 ip's
Minnesota- Win, no earned runs in 8 ip's
Oakland- do decision, 2 earned runs in 7 ip's
Seattle- Loss, 5 earned runs in 7 ip's
Cleveland- Win, 5 earned runs in 7 ip's
Cleveland- Win, 4 earned runs in 6 ip's
Baltimore- Win, no earned runs in 8 ip's
Montreal- Win, 3 earned runs in 8 ip's
Detroit- Win, no erned runs in 7 ip's
Tampa- Win, 1 earned run in 6 ip's
Baltimore- Win, 2 earned runs in 6.2 ip's
Florida- No decision, 3 earned runs in 6 ip's
Detroit- Win, 5 earned runs in 5,2 ip's
Toronto- Win, 2 earned in 6.2 ip's
Toronto- Win, no earned runs in 5.2 ip's
Angels- no decision, 2 earned runs in 6.1 ip's
Tampa- no decision, 2 earned in 7.1 ip's
Tampa- Win, 2 earned runs in 7 ip's

Clemens has only pitched once against Boston in 4 series.

He has pitched 4 times against Toronto and won 3 times. Yet he has a era of 4.80 in those starts.

He has pitched 4 time against Tampa for 3 wins. While compiling a 3.80 era.

Clemens started 8 games against teams over .500. Which iclude The A's, Seattle, Minnesota, California Cleveland and Boston. He recv'd 4 victories but compiled an era of 4.24

Those are not Cy young numbers.

My vote goes for Hudson or Garcia.

I'm sick of this soft team crap. Thats all BS. Clemens has won 16 games against tough teams. You can't help who they are, thats the way the schedule is played. He should win it hands down. 16 wins is 16 wins thats the bottom line...

the performance he gave yesterday is EXACTLY what i am talking about when i say he doesnt deserve the Cy Young award. Dont let the win total fool you, he is good but not that good this year. He gave up 5 runs against a last place team, but here comes the Yankee offense to bail him out. He didnt get the official win, but he certainly shouldve lost.

I say give the award to Freddy Garcia, with Hudson and Buerhle close runnerups along with Clemens

Updated stats:

Player TEAM W L ERA G GS CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB SO
1. T Hudson OAK 15 7 3.29 30 29 3 0 196.2 174 79 72 16 62 151

4. R Clemens NYY 18 1 3.48 28 28 0 0 189.0 177 79 73 16 56 186

With only 5 or 6 starts left, it will be hard not to give it to Clemens if he's the only 20 game winner. Mulder's been hit hard recently.

*Here's another cool stat why Clemens deserves it.

AL Leaders in Win-Loss Percentage (Thru games of AUG-31-2001)
15 decisions (0.1 per scheduled game)
----------------------------------------------
1. Roger Clemens NYY .947 (18-1)
2. Paul Abbott Sea .813 (13-3)
3. C.C. Sabathia Cle .778 (14-4)
4. Jamie Moyer Sea .762 (16-5)
5. Freddy Garcia Sea .750 (15-5)
6t Eric Milton Min .722 (13-5)
Aaron Sele Sea .722 (13-5)
8. Mark Mulder Oak .696 (16-7)
9. Tim Hudson Oak .682 (15-7)
10t Hideo Nomo Bos .647 (11-6)
Jarrod Washburn Ana .647 (11-6)
-------------------------------------------------

No one is even close.

Clemens has won 14 straight decisions, tying the single-season team record, set by Jack Chesbro in 1904 and matched by Whitey Ford in 1961.

If Abbott wins today (SEA up 5-4, 9th), he'll be 14-3, but still has no chance at catching Clemens by years-end and I don't even see him in the top-10 in ERA.

*Mulder has seven times as many losses as Clemens and 10th in ERA; Clemens is fifth.

*Lol, it's funny how you can manipulate stats to a player seem a bit better, but I really believe Clemens deserves it.
