When they say it's not about the money, you better believe *coughcoughAlexRodriguezcoughcough* that it <i>is</i> about the money.
Look, in all fairness, Ivan is arguably the best at his position, but has never gotten so much as "fair market value", much less that big payday everyone around him seems to be landing. Now a team is willing to give that to him, so he jumped at the opportunity.
Should he have done it? Probably not, and certainly not if he was concerned with winning another title. The Tigers will be in "rebuilding mode" for the duration of his career there, and unlike football, there is rarely any dramatic swings from worst to first (like the Panthers did from two years ago).
Besides, as his ex-Rangers teammate (and the last sucker for the Tigers' "big spending") Juan Gonzalez would tell him, Comerica is a pitcher's ballpark-- his offensive numbers will probably drop significantly.
