Whether he is a good singer/performer is a matter of opinion. I don't understand why he had to change his name from Prince to some symbol.
Actually from what I heard, the only reason he pulled the name change stunt was to get around his old record contract. He wanted more music control and his old company still had the rights to the "Prince" name. Finally when the contract ran out he changed his name back.
That makes sense I suppose.
I don't think he's nearly as nuts as he makes it seem. Obviously, he knows how to market himself and his longevity speaks for it's self.
