Yankees plan to build new stadium

by Anne Michaud

The New York Yankees plan to announce within the next two weeks that they want to build a new, $750 million stadium across the street from Yankee Stadium. The new stadium would be in McCombs Dam Park.

According to sources close to the deal, the team will ask for $450 million in public infrastructure investment to build a hotel and conference center, a new Metro North stop, and a ferry landing, as well as three new parks elsewhere in the Bronx. Under state law, the team must replace the parkland it uses.

The team will likely seek to finance the facility by issuing tax-exempt Industrial Development Authority bonds. Sources say revenue from the new stadium would more than pay off the bonds. The Yankees were at first looking at a design that would have increased luxury boxes to 70. But the design did not work well, and the team is now planning 50 to 52 skyboxes. A spokesman for the team says the Yankees are continuing to work out the details with the Bloomberg administration and that an announcement is expected in the coming weeks.

According to sources, Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion played a major role in bringing the city and the Yankees together.

Seeing as this is the Yankees, I have the feeling that this won't face the same backlash from the public as the Jets wanting to build a new stadium.
That Jets stadium idea is stupid and so is this. That's like ripping down a piece of history. Fucking Bloomberg. He truly makes me fucking SICK!!!!!!

Just to be fair, Giuliani was the mayor who kept earmarking money for this project, even post-9/11, when the money clearly could've been put to better use elsewhere.

Having said that, if Steinbrenner wanted to build a new Stadium with all his moolah (which the Jets are at least offering to do halfway for theirs), more power to him. But he has always wanted the city to be the one funding it, so frankly, I say let the team stay in that big beautiful jewel it already has.

It's already had one renovation; if he's that hard up on luxury boxes (which he can never seem to have enough of), let them figure a way to build more in the current place. Perhaps by expanding the seating area completely around, including under the facade in center field?

You know, I always wondered about that area. Here you have this vast section in center that is completely unused. There is absolutely nothing out there, but this big black section. How hard would it be to put seating in that area?
The problem with Yankee Stadium is that even though it looks beautiful on TV, it's infrastructure is close to 30 years old and engineering of baseball stadiums have progressed to the point where it's a relic again.
If anyone needs a new stadium, it's the Chicago Cubs.

Look out, the sky is falling!
the stadium is almost a landmark & would freak me out if it were gone. i think the public is going to freak out about it only for that reason. they want to build the new one right across the street, so it won't be as big a deal as the jets building a new stadium. it's not like traffic is gonna change much if the yankees do it. but it was a different story with the jets.

i thought that used to be a seating area but because of the angle the glare from the sun was overwhelming or something, so they painted it black.

I think the idea of the Jets getting a new stadium is a good one. The Jets need their own stadium, even though downtown Manhattan is not the best spot. There are much better spots on Long Island that are much easier to get to.

Being from Boston, the idea of tearing down a historic stadium for a new one (ie. FENWAY) has been an ongoing battle for years. Yankee stadium is one of the best places in the country to watch a baseball game. The cities that are building new stadiums are due to them falling apart or just not being efficient for operations. I don't see Yankee Stadium falling into either category.
