Dave Bresnahan
Catcher
1984-87
The williamsport bills , the cleveland indians' AA farm team, were playing the reading Phillies in August 1987. Th phils had a runner on third whenBresnahan called time and ran to the dugout to "repair his mitt" While he was there, he grabbed a potato he had peleled earlier. On the next pitch, Bresnahan fired the spud scud past third base. The runner came home and found Bresnahan waiting for him with the real ball. a rucus ensued, An umpire retrieved the potato and awarded the runner home for Bresnahan’s deception. The following day, Bresnahan was fined by his manager and then released by the Bills’ parent club, the Cleveland Indians, for what they perceived as an affront to the integrity of the game.
This is so very beautiful thank you.
And on a related note... <a href=http://www.baseballreliquary.org/Bresnahan.htm target=new>they preserved the potato for future generations to pause and reflect upon</a>.
