(and by the way GMANN, you DID do the right thing. If you were actually hit and then walked away then I can understand the feelings of regret in not retaliating. But you weren't hit, you merely got your friend out of a potential mess. One should ony respect such a choice.)

You did the right thing. Like Laz said you never know who has a gun these days and your best bet is to walk away. Unless of course you life or someone else is in danger then go for the kill. I mean only in self-defense.

Maybe. But that logic won't hold up when the on-duty guys eventually DO show up. You think they're gonna buy any part of your story when they find out the opposition is two of their "brothers?" In fact, you'll probably get in even deeper trouble b/c they'll make sure the off-duty guys avoid getting in trouble with the job.
And GMann, your choice was right. If you swung, you would probably have subjected Mikey to a beat down, whether he wanted it or not. That's not the best gift to give. You had to think for two. From being on the other side, I'm sure he appreciates you helping him out of it.
