pay them or this country should just get rid of the whole athletics tied into academics thing. We should go towards a more European like club sport system.

Some markets get oversaturated with sports teams wiht pro, minor league, semi pro etc etc that no one wants to go see the minor league games. Marrying athetics and academics gives those teams an instant fan base with their students and alumni. It's a beautiful thing. People pay thousands of dollars to colleges to get a top notch education, giving one to an athlete who may otherwise not have been able to get into school is just the same as paying them.
