Bye, Bye Ms. American Pie - Silera - 06-16-2004

My sons love this song, and today I tried to explain to them that it was about the draft and the Vietnam War. The simplest way to put it was, when you turn eighteen you have to register because you're a male american citizen, and at the government's discretion, you will be called into action when needed.

This was their exact conversation after:

Carlos- When we turn eighteen then we have to go fight in the war.

Daniel- But, what if we die?

Carlos- Then they remember you on Memorial Day.

Long Pause.

Daniel- That's not fair.

I just laughed.

UMMMM you are kidding,right?

The song Bye, Bye Ms. American Pie, is about the death of Buddy Holly, Richie Valenz , and The Bib Bopper. Ya know... like umm the day they died in a plane crash... ya know the Day the Music Died.

And here, just to back myself up, because I most likely will not be here later to back my self up......

umm yeah... the Vietnam War

Pliskin!!!

How the FUCK are you?

I never knew that. I always interpreted it the way I explained it to the kids, because I saw it as a song about losing innocence and saying goodbye to friends too soon and too young to die.

I'm not going to argue the literal interpretation of the song with anyone, but poetry is always analogous to many different events and moments in life and in history.

Thanks for the heads up though.

Did you then explain to them that when they turn 13, cops are going to frisk them every two weeks?

Luckily, they're white spics.

"Passers" as we like to call ourselves.
