I believe it's a combination of injuries, along with the fact that Vince gave him two options... either be a wrestler, and not be utilized, (i.e. fired) or be a broadcaster, which probably comes with benefits and a more stable pay structure.

he has a neck injury, in which if he aggravates it, he could lose mobility and risk paralyzation. So, he has voluntarily semi-retired and has become a pretty good announcer
