I was the fucking man in little league in my earlier years. I was a chunk of flubber back then too and the field didn't have a fence. I knocked the shit out of that thing 75% of the time into a row of trees. That bought me time to rumble around the bases as 'fast' as I could. I thought I was the shit. I was on the cusp age where I could move up to the faster pitch leagues or stay back in the minors if I wished. My coach spent a few weeks trying to talk me into staying back. I declined and my baseball career was all downhill after that.
We didn't get trophies every year. Thank god. I'd have too many pointless pieces of shit. Some years they gave them out to everyone. I still have the one from the minors. The one where we actually earned the championship. It's in a box somewhere. The other ones were trashed when I moved out of my parents.
When I moved up in leagues I could still hit but if I didn't hit it just right, my fat ass was going to be thrown out at first. I quickly learned how to lean into a pitch and take one for the team. That became my crowning achievement. Who the fuck needs a trophy when you have stories about getting pitchers thrown out of the game. Kicking the first baseman in the knee as I got to the bag. (that kid was a prick).
As people more and more try to protect these little kids from the real world, let themselves forget that winning and losing is part of life and more often than not you're going to lose.
On a side note kid's activities these days are too organized. Nothing beats coming home from school getting changed and running out the door to play football or street hockey or whatever other game the kids in the neighborhood want to play. Of course if it was raining or snowing that was automatic cause for a phonechain to be activiated to announce a good ole game of football.
I realize many people will not have made it reading this this far. Oh well, I can always look back on this thread with feelings of nostalgia for yesteryear.
