Does it make sense to you, that IF a society makes movements to accept a faith/sex/colour/SEXUAL PREFERANCE/hair colour, any of those said groups would be sensible in taking steps to once again isolate themselves?????????????

If I could interject quickly.

I want to remind you that we-- and I mean Americans, you Canadians are different -- live in a country where ethnicities are still placed in front of the word "American" to denote what we are. We have African-Americans, Chinese-Americans, and so on.

I can hop on the subway and head to Spanish Harlem, Little Italy, or Chinatown.

We celebrate the birth of our nation as a whole, but at the same time hold acknowledgements such as Black History Month and the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Our "melting pot" ideal is great in theory, but in practice it does not work as well as we want it to. This society still very much embraces the <i>individual</i>, and the individuals right to be known as a unique identity, not as a faceless cog in some multi-colored, multi-cultural machine.

<b>EDIT</b>:

Here's a good analogy: picture a cake mix. You throw in the powder, a couple eggs, milk, sugar, hell even some chocolate, and you stir and blend it until all the indivdual ingredients are indistinguishable from each other. That is the ideal.

What this country so badly wants to do is blend all the ingredients together, but <i>still let you identify where the eggs are, and the milk, and chocolate, and sugar</i>, and that is simply not feasible.
