Bush says forests need to be thinned
#46
Quote:So, I'm supposed to act like I care and believe what they tell me? Sorry, been burned too many times to give a shit anymore.
Well... yeah. Politicians are supposed to act like they care about you; show that you care that they are representing you and your interests correctly. Hell, even if you didn't vote for the person, remeber that once they are office, they answer to you (not you directly, obviously, but everyone in that district/city/state/country/whatever). If you don't speak your mind to tell them, how can they know they're "burning" you, as you put it?

Are you familiar with the name Robert Moses*? He is the man who is essentially responsible for designing and constructing modern-day New York-- all the bridges, tunnels, expressways, the U.N. He wielded tremendous, almost absolute power between the 1930's to 60s. The thing was, he was an appointee, not even elected.

Late into the 1950s, he wanted to make a super-highway (one of three) that would basically cut through lower Manhattan (the other two would run through midtown, and Harlem), running east-west.

Well, we don't have those super-highways cutting Manhattan to pieces. Know why? The people of the neighborhoods that would have been destroyed (parts of SoHo, Tribeca, and the Flatiron District) stood up to him, took his ass to court, and won. The mayor finally conceded that Moses was basically poison, and fired him.

Long story made short, the so-called "little people" still have a voice-- you just have to make yourself heard.

P.S.-- Want to know what happens to "little people" who don't speak up? Ever been on the Cross-Bronx Expressway? How about the L.I.E.? He had his critics, to be sure, but no one really stood up and said, "this is bad for the people" before that point.

*If you ever have a chance to watch Rick Burns' documentary on the history of New York, sit down and watch it. Damn fascinating.
