Did you know how military ships are named?? I was in the Coast Guard, and the cutters(any vessel longer than 65 feet) are named after many things. The Navy does this the same way. There are cutters named after admirable human qualities, like Dependable and Courageous. Islands, like Long Island and Staten Island and Key West. Certain cutters that work on the buoys out at sea are named after trees, flowers, and plants, like Elm and Juniper. Some are named after fish, like Hammerhead and Stingray. Construction cutters are named after tools, like Hammer and Axe. The Navy names their ships after famous people in their history like The Sullivans. Presidents, like Reagan(recently built Aircraft Carrier) Could you imagine a USS Bill Clinton?? Attack subs are named after US Cities, and the Battleships were named after states.

Here's an interesting one sure to make you Cannananandian bashers giggle. There is a ship that was built as a joint US Canaananadian venture to break ice in the great lakes. The Canadians built it, and the Coast Guard sails it. It's called the Mackinaw. The Canadians were afraid that the US would take the vessel out of the great lakes to break ice elsewhere, so they said, "Fuck you, eh" to the Americans and built it a foot too wide to fit thru the Erie Canal. So it is locked into the Great Lakes permanently. Another bit of useless knowledge, the newest CG Icebreaker, the Healy was named after a captain who served in Alaska before the turn of the 20th Century and the ship was named by a group of Junior High School Students from Queens.
