Best war movie ever is Triumph of the Will.
I still wait for a sequel.

If Lord of the Rings is a war movie, then so is:
Star Wars
Blade
Underworld
The Matrix
Gladiator
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Kill Bill
Independence Day
Terminator
..and just about any other movie with some fight scenes.
This is by far the most asinine thing that has ever been debated.

so, what you're saying is that a true war movie is one that features the jungle, some tanks and some true-to-life weapons?
hogwash I say.
and Starship Troopers would be my fav (single war movie flick).
KILL THOSE BUGS!!
and "Kill Bill" is a war movie?? wtf? huh? (great flick but how would that qualify as a "war movie")

It wasn't a movie, it was a documentary.

No, a war movie is a movie based on an actual, non-fictional war.

a certain diagram involving the point and your head suddenly comes to mind right about now.

A war film is a war film, it needs no explanation.
LoTR is not a "War" film, it's a fantasy film.
Star Wars is a sci-fi fantasy film, it's not a "war" film thought it technically is but not by genre standards.
even full metal jacket isn't a war film per se, it's a military drama at best. It delves more into the aspect of boot camp training than war itself.
Platoon is a war film.
