9-11 flip side
#1
The flip side to the other thread:

and I start this only cause I don't want my comments to be seen as a defilement of the other.

Part of me IS very suprised to see how "back to usual" things have gotten. I didn't think much about 9-11 today. The radio didn't mark the event with anything special.

At first their were flags EVERYWHERE you looked.
Time passed and many of the flags were tatters on the antennas of passing cars.

Now the flags are all but gone. A few people at work were wearing pins, but I almost sneered when I saw them. It seemed to be as token a gesture as wearing a shamrock on St. Patty's day.

I view it as more of an "observance" to the day but it IS a shame that ithe country has become somewhat immune to the event that occured 2 years ago today.

I wear a FDNY tee shirt on this day every year as a sort of reminder you can say for those who served us honorablly.

I never put a flag on my car, but we still have 3 flags up at my house. It's not one of those put it up just for 9/11 things either. We keep them up all year round in memorial and as a reminder of who we are and what we stand for as a country.

all the stations I listen to in the morning had a moment of silent at 8:47 AM this morning. (WPLJ, Z100, WKTU, WQHT, WPDH).

I saw quite a few of my neighbors flags at half staff this morning.

Personally, I've had a flag on my car from day one as a sign of support. My bro-in-law is a Port Authority cop. he gave me some stickers for my cars remembering those that we lost from PAPD, NYFD and NYPD. It's the least I could do to show my support for the families of the ones we lost. I don't know the statistics on NYPD but NYFD lost 343 and PAPD lost 37 that day.

Has the tone come down? Yes, it has. Was it expected? to some degree. I think that even if people don't show it or say it, in some form, they all remember it. 9/11 is a hard day to forget.

agreed,

but I kinda viewed it as a line where "nothing would be the same" again, after that day. Where profound and tangible differences would be made.

I think it has fallen short of that.

Life has to go on. I doubt a soul in the world has forgotten, nor will they ever, but to let it bring the world as you know it to a screeching halt makes the terrorists the winners.

I agree. Everyone was so "gung-ho" and super patriotic after the attacks and it did seem like it would be that way for a long time to come, but unfortunately that sentiment started to fade. :disappointed:

I tried to only make changes I would live with,

I didn't want to plaster my car with flags,
if I didn't intend to have them there in a year, or two or ten.

I think the biggest dissappointment has been in our government.
how fast a national tragedy became just another chess piece in play in the game of politics.

Unfortunately that's the way politics and politicians are in our country. They talk a good game, but when it comes down to it, all they care about are themselves.

Not to belittle anything that happened around 9/11, but I thought when the members of Congress all got together and started singing God Bless America, it was the biggest joke ever. You knew they didn't want to do that, but it was good "face time" for all of them and they knew it.

yup, a dog and pony show.

If they cared about "justice" and retribution, we'd be in Saudi Arabia right now, not Iraq.
