I think that's true, but it could also very well be a case of how much the times truly have changed.

When our folks were growing up (or even moreso, in our grandparents' time), marriage could be seen as a combining of provisions. Not to become overly sexist or anything, but the man would provide financial security, and the woman would provide care of the household.

But our generation has seen the rise of the true independent, both in men <i>and</i> women. Remember, it was not that long ago that women were fully measured by how well they married (that is, if their husband was a good provider), but now a woman does not need be defined this way. Marriage then becomes a matter of <i>convenience</i>, as opposed to <i>necessity</i>. And there is always that lingering thought in both spouses' minds that, should things not work out, it's ok because they can provide for themselves.

How else to explain why the divorce rate just about equals the marriage rate around 50%? Financially, emotionally, people are capable of sustaining their own existences, to the point where they see nothing wrong with abandoning what is <i>supposed</i> to be a lifetime merger of financial and emotional support.
