FU to contractors!!!!!
#1
Okay, so I'm having some work done on my house. Converting to gas heat from electric, installing central air and having vinyl siding/new gutters/new leaders installed. I took 3 vacation days to be here while the work was being done.

Everything was great with the heating & a/c guys. Not one problem (other than one minor boo-boo).

Completely different story with the siding guys. They were supposed to be here Monday. Monday mornng, the salesman called and said that they were finishing up some stuff on another job and would be at my house either Monday afternoon or first thing Tuesday morning. Well, Monday afternoon came and went, Tuesday morning came and by 11:30, still no siding crew. Brokenjaw called the company, they made some calls and determined that the crew (subcontractors) were still finishing up the last job and then had to eat lunch and would be here by 1:00. I asked what time they work til (figuring we've seen the Mexican crews working til dark). Her response to me was, "Oh, on a nice day like this? At least til 4:00"

Anyway, they show up about 12:40 and they left at about 4:30. They messed up one side of my fence and left a huge mess, all their tools, etc.

This morning it was raining, but it stopped by about 7:10. About 8:15, one of the siding guys shows up and says, "Were any of the other guys here?" I said no and he asked to use my phone to call his boss. One boss doesn't answer his cell phone, the other boss tells him it's raining and they're not working. The guy tells him it's blue skies here and that he'll come pick him up. When he was leaving, I gave him the phone number here and asked him to call if they weren't coming back.

That was about 2 hours ago. Brokenjaw just called the company, and then the company called me to tell me that they'd be by today at some point to secure their stuff, but they won't be working today. Seems since they woke up this morning and saw rain (which ended quickly), they decided to just call it a day. What the fuck kind of company works like this?

Now I get to look forward to these guys coming by with an attitude. I can hardly wait.

Second!

After taking a year to build the apartment we are now living in (which was done 6 months after the initial estimated time of completion) everything was going fine except the internet which was our problem and the phone which was seemingly Att and Verizon's fuckup. Two weeks later Verizon determined that the contractors never hooked our apartment up to the phone lines. If I have to pay a dime of this fix and for having useless phone service for two weeks I'm going to uhhh err not be very happy and such.

You've had no phone service for 2 weeks?

If it weren't for cell phones I'd actually be pissed about it. I just don't want to pay for the service I haven't gotten yet.

*we are actually going to go hook up the wires tonight ourselves if no one does it today.

I'm actually a little scared of when these guys show up to "secure" their stuff. It looks like a crew from the chain gang. The boyfriend is fucking livid and threatening to call them and tell them to take the siding that they've done so far off the house or get another crew in here.

I co own a painting Biz so i could give you some insite.

heres what you do.

Charge them back for every missed appointment, they should give you a call when they aren't going to make an appointment not the other way around.

If they have damaged your fence then they are resposible for the cost of repairs.
Take pictures.

they are to clean the site everyday at no cost to you in man hours. if this is not done and results in the damage of your grass or lawn in any way, that can also be deducted from your bill.

Okay, the two guys just left.

As far as charging back for missed appointments, I can't really say that there were any. They're working outside and I don't technically need to be home. Also, the fact that it's a weather dictated business, I suppose they could say that it WAS raining today. I was busting the guys chops about it being a beautiful day to work today, not too hot.

As far as the fence, I did take pictures and they sort of fixed it while they were here. They said that they would take care of it fully when the job is done.

I'm not sure what constitutes "clean". I mean, they have a big pile of old gutters, extra pieces of siding and stuff, on the one side of my driveway in an area where there really isn't lawn that could be damaged. The driveway itself is full of materials and their scaffolding. The back yard has their cutters or whatever and a couple of ladders. I was kind of pissed about the empty cups and bottles left around.

They say they'll be back tomorrow (of course, I'll be back to work), but it's supposed to rain tomorrow.

I agree that it was good advice. I'm just not sure it applies to my situation.

As for a Better Business Bureau, of course I could report them, but I think it's smarter to wait til the job is completed before burning any bridges. Of course, Brokenjaw wants to bash heads.

I'm taking it as a lesson to never use subcontractors.
