Volunteer mostly use the sirens, our town is a combination of Career/Volunteer. The residents actually bitched when they did away with the sirens, because they actually liked having the warning so their kids would get out of the streets, etc before firefighters respond.
These sirens are.......well, sirens. They can be heard from a good distance away and were actually paid for by the gov't back in the day for use as air raid sirens. They only Cycle 3 times when there's a call (about 25-30 seconds of going up and and down), so it's not constant.
