America's Biggest Threat

'big brother' has always been there. September 11th made them put a name on it 'Patriot act' and then people really got a look at all of these civil liberties 'lost'. I'm not denying that any politicians on either side are riding the terrorism card. Regardless, it is a real threat everyday. And the fact that the focus on it is taking away from other issues is moreso a result of the media and the population in general. What's on the news when they aren't talking terror threats and war on terrorism? Laci Peterson, Kobe Bryant and Lori Hacking.

I thought Michal Moore covered this in Bowling for Columbine.

Elaborate. I haven't seen it.

The economy was already shit before the attacks. Though there is no doubt whatsoever that it was damaged far worse afterwords.

My point is take a look at these most recent terror alerts. This "recent" information is years old. Why was it withhold for so long? I completely suspect the timing of this orange alert. And the media just eats it right up, have to make sure to have some intern make up huge graphics to roll on the screen "TERROR ALERT!!!"

It's fine to question the timing based on years old information but what is smothered beneath all the coverage is that the computer that held this old info was updated as late as January this year. Also they recovered correspondence on there in which the years old plots and whatnot were discussed as late as three weeks ago.

The word is that a plot was planned for 60 days before the NOv. 2nd election which would be Sep. 2nd which is also the day Bush is speaking at the convention.

I'll just say while we all ponder the thought of timing and validity of terror alerts one thing should be remembered. After 9-11 everyone bitched about how come the government doesn't tell us more about these daily threats regardless of how credible they are to give us a headsup as to what they see?

Here we are years later getting alerts with pretty specific info and everyone blows it off as political.

My point isn't to ignore terrorism. My point is that unless we start including it as part of a larger picture of the state of this country and the world, we're doing nothing to address it. The economy suffered due to the attacks yes, but it also suffers because we have a society that isn't educated, corporations that are rewarded when they move operations offshore, and politicians that know most Americans will not question what they read in the news or see on TV.

Noted.

What can one do to better educate society? Or are we just fucked?

They wouldn't have told us about this one if it wasn't election time.

I could be wrong but they have a bad track record. It's there own fault, if they didn't have breakdowns and people telling on others we would not have known half of what we know.

Let us not forget, the media is owned by large corporations. They all serve their own agendas, and they will only get more and more powerful.

I think they would've told us. Though I could be wrong too.

What bad track record? Raising the level and nothing happening? Is that really all that bad?

I read this 5 times and my head is about to explode.

Yes and anyone that watches or reads one source and takes everything they say word for word as the honest to god truth should be shot.
