BURNING SEX TOYS BRING CHAOS TO MOTORWAY

A truckload of burning sex toys and a burst water pipe caused misery for Midland motorists yesterday as some of the region's main roads were brought to a standstill.
Whips, plastic breasts and blow-up dolls were among the paraphernalia that spilled out from a lorry and onto the M6 at about 4am.
The articulated lorry, which was also carrying paper, burst into flames as it headed along the northbound M6 between Junction 7 (Great Barr) and Junction 8 (the M5 interchange).
Police closed the smoke-filled motorway as firefighters battled to bring the blazing lorry under control, while tailbacks stretched back to Junction 5 (Castle Bromwich).
Six fire crews from West Bromwich, Handsworth, Wednesbury and Walsall attended the scene.
Motorists on the M42 were also stuck in traffic jams in the morning rush-hour after a second lorry fire resulted in the closure of one lane while the debris was moved from the westbound carriageway between junctions 3 (Portway) and 3a (Wood End).
A burst water pipe on the A34 Stratford Road brought traffic to a standstill in Shirley, Solihull. Heavy goods vehicles were being directed away from the area as other traffic was diverted into small side roads, AA Roadwatch spokesman Matthew Sparks said. He added: 'We had major traffic problems throughout the morning.
'Much of the traffic on the M6 that was blocked was sent towards the M5 and back up the motorway which caused more congestion. Traffic was also bad in Shirley and we heard from our air helicopters that lorries could not go down there because the diversions were through the back roads.'
The southbound carriageway of the M6 was re-opened just before 5am and police reopened a single lane of the northbound route two hours later.
The motorway was completely reopened just after 10am but traffic had not returned to normal until about noon.
The M6 was once again brought to a virtual standstill last night after a rush hour accident. The crash, involving one car careering out of control on the nearside lane, happened at around 4.45pm on the southbound section of the motorway near Stafford.
A 25-year-old man was airlifted to University Hospital Stoke and four others, believed to be from the same car, were taken to hospital by land ambulance.
All three lanes were closed while the helicopter landed at the scene, which was between junctions 13 and 12, and ten mile tailbacks were still in place three hours later.
