Pete Rose on Trial
#1
Did anyone happen to catch this crap on ESPN the other night? For those who don't know ESPN had this mock trial complete with fake courtroom and all. They also had Johnny Cochran (Defense) and Alan Dershowitz (Prosecutor) as the lawyers. First OJ, now this. Rolleyes

Basically all it was this fake trial on whether or not Pete Rose should be admitted into the Hall of Fame. I couldn't watch more than 5-10 minutes of it because it was so stupid. I'm sitting there thinking Pete Rose is probably watching this saying, "Give it a fucking rest already!"

How many times do they have to drag up this story which happened like 15 yrs. ago? People won't even be talking about this latest war in Iraq in 15 yrs.

I don't recall the exact details of this gambling mess, but my feelings are this. If he did bet on his own team to lose, then I fully agree he should be banned for life. Now, if he bet on other teams or even bet on his own team to win, then I see no problem with it.
Now, you may ask what is the difference between betting on your team losing or winning. The reasoning behind it is this, he could have easily thrown games but it is much harder to guarantee victory.

So, bottom line is this, if he did bet on his own team to lose then end of story, he's banned for life. If it was on other teams or his own team winning, end the bullshit and let the fucking guy in the Hall.

What are your feelings on Pete Rose?

I wish they would take the middle ground and install him in Cooperstown based on his outstanding playing career.

Hell, if while doing that, they place a footnote at the bottom marking his transgressions committed as a manager, fine. But a player who has the most hits in the history of the game should not be on the outside looking in. And should they wait until he's passed on to admit him posthumously, then quite a few current and future players won't get the chance to learn from him directly not to make the mistakes he did.

Fuck em all. let the guy in just on his stats alone, however the guy should at least be somewhat contrite. If he bet, admit it, swallow your pride and take your lumps. It's bad enough you may not make the hall of fame while you're still around to savor the moment. BTW I missed it, what was the verdict anyway??
I'm not quite there yet

Well, I was wise enough to watch the Sportscenter following the trial... why actually sit through that drivel when they'll rehash it for you later? Wink

The verdict was 8-4 in favor of letting Rose into the Hall. But the jurors also voted him 11-1 of actually betting on baseball. So the general feeling is that despite his actions, he should be eligible.

Nice! Glad to see some people aren't as uptight as Bud Selig.

As for the one person who voted Rose didn't bet on baseball, what rock have they been living under? I never thought this part was even up for debate. We know he did it, whether or not he cares to admit it. My argument is if he didn't bet on his own team to lose, then it shouldn't matter.

I say, wait until he dies, THEN let him in.

Brain, todays' players WILL learn if they announce that Rose will be let in after he dies. It would be a most fitting punishment

I know that MLB would never go this route but man would that be something for all of the world to see

a major sports league pretty much pulling the dickiest of moves on a Hall of Fame player.

Fair enough. But I think one of the most lasting images in recent baseball history is when all the players got to surround Ted Williams on the field at Fenway at the All-Star Game back in 1999.

And I was thinking it would be a damn shame if Rose died, was placed in posthumously, and didn't have the same opportunity to participate in a moment like that.

I say this - if Pete Rose just "manned up" and admitted fault, he should be given that moment as well on some All Star Game field...

I don't really wish to see the man robbed of such a moment personally...I'm quite the forgiving person myself actually.

BUT...

if he keeps insisting that he's wholly innocent...well, then he should be denied the honor while alive and ultimately....

sucks to be Pete (and its all on him) if it turns out that way.
